Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: ‘Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all.’ Proverbs 31:28-31

#28DaysOfBlackHistory Day 9 by Franceska Marie Grace Baptist Church... Mae Carol Jemison... (born October 17, 1956) An American engineer, physician, and former NASA astronaut. She became the first black woman to travel into space when she served as a mission specialist aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour. Jemison joined NASA's astronaut corps in 1987 and was selected to serve for the STS-47 mission, during which she orbited the Earth for nearly eight days on September 1220, 1992. Upon returning to the United States after serving in the Peace Corps, Jemison settled in Los Angeles, California. In Los Angeles, she entered into private practice and took graduate level engineering courses. The flights of Sally Ride and Guion Bluford in 1983 inspired Jemison to apply to the astronaut program. Jemison first applied to NASA's astronaut training program in October 1985, but NASA postponed selection of new candidates after the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster in 1986. Jemison reapplied in 1987 and was chosen out of roughly 2,000 applicants. #YAMFAMgbc

#28DaysOfBlackHistory Day 8 by Antoine Phibetasinger Dolberry Grace Baptist Church... Lucy Terry Prince... (1724 - 1821) Although best known as the author of the first poem composed by an African American woman, Lucy Terry Prince was a remarkable woman whose many accomplishments included arguing a case before the Supreme Court. Lucy was stolen from Africa as an infant and sold to Ebenezer Wells of Deerfield, Massachusetts. She was baptized during the Great Awakening, and nineteen years later, at the age of 20, she was "admitted to the fellowship of the church." Although Lucy Terry was a poet, only one of her poems, a ballad called "Bars Fight," has survived. In 1756, Lucy Terry married Abijah Prince, a prosperous free black man who purchased her freedom. Lucy was well known for her speaking ability -- according to her 1821 obituary, "the fluency of her speech captivated all around her" -- and she used her skills a number of times in defense of her family’s rights and property. #YAMFAMgbc

#28DaysOfBlackHistory Day 7 by Tyesha Minors Grace Baptist Church... Sarah Mapps Douglass... Ahead of her time in almost every respect, Sarah Mapps was a well-educated professional whose life and work spanned nearly the entire 19th century. Remembered as an activist, educator, and abolitionist, she believed cultivating the intellect through education was the most powerful means of fighting discrimination against African Americans and women. In 1833, Mapps began teaching, soon establishing her own school which would eventually merge with Cheyney State University, the first institution of higher learning for African Americans. In addition to being an educator, Douglas was a dedicated activist. She was a founder and long-time member of the Philadelphia Anti-Slavery Society and helped start the Female Literary Society, which sought to promote literacy amongst African American women and create solidarity between free and enslaved African Americans. In 1853, at nearly 60 years old, Douglas became the first African American female student at the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania. 2 years later, at the age of 61, she married for the first time, becoming Sarah Mapps Douglass. In honor of black history month, I'd like to celebrate black women who, despite the odds, have not only achieved their own personal success, but have carved out important space for black women to become leaders in education. #YAMFAMgbc
