Though you might not plan to hike on a rainy day, there's no doubt that Santanoni's porches are an excellent place to be to experience the beauty of a rainfall! #campsantanoni #historicadirondacks #rain #spring

On April 25, 1862, Robert H. Pruyn arrived in Japan to serve as its second United States ambassador. He and his son, Robert C. Pruyn, lived in Zenpuku-ji Temple. The experience directly inspired Pruyn's design for Santanoni's main lodge. Women are at the heart of one of Santanoni's most interesting contradictions. Even as guests of the formal Pruyns, women could dress casually and were expected to paddle, hike, and bushwhack in the surrounding woods. However, Anna Parker Pruyn, Huybertie Pruyn's mother, was the President of the Albany Anti-Suffrage Association and Anna Pruyn was one of its members. #campsantanoni #womenshistorymonth #throwbackthursday #antisuffrage #suffrage #adirondacks

Did you know that Adirondack Architectural Heritage (AARCH), one of the Santanoni Partners, is looking for a new Executive Director? In anticipation of Executive Director Steven Engelhart’s retirement in 2021, the Adirondack Architectural Heritage board of directors is pleased to announce that the search for his successor is now underway. This is an incredible opportunity for someone to lead what National Trust President Stephanie Meeks called one of the most effective rural... preservation organizations in the nation. Over the past 30 years AARCH has developed an effective and far-ranging program of public education, advocacy, technical assistance, and historic site management that serves hundreds of communities in New York State’s Adirondack region. The Position Profile, which includes information about AARCH, its current strategic priorities, a description of the position, and the qualifications of applicants, is available https://www.aarch.org/about/office/careers/

Let's be honest. Mid-March comes with lots of strange, tough memories this year. Instead of thinking of last year, here's a smile from two years ago. 2019 brought us so much snow that the staff outhouse was nearly buried. Thank goodness we left the door open! (Photo March 17, 2019)

In late winter, the Santanoni Caretaker's house was a busy place. The Pruyns hired Arthur Bailey to tap 900 maple trees for their sap, which was boiled down into maple syrup. You can almost smell the sweetness in the air!

Ice cutting was an important winter job for the smaller group of staff that lived at Santanoni year-round. The farm, service complex, and camp each had ice houses which were critical to preserving food during the warm summer season. #ThrowbackThursday #ice
