This is our long time volunteer Carlos, holding bags donated from Sam, (pictured right) at WHOLE FOODS Thank you so very much, we want to shout out @wholefoods for helping supply us with yet another necessity that was needed this week!! We’re gearing up for our Week 2 Food Pantry and last week we DOUBLED our numbers from the week before! Although we are disappointed that this is due to our economic crisis and poverty skyrocketing, leaving communities without food ...for their families, we feel incredibly grateful to be able to give groceries every week. In hopes that this doesn’t continue much longer, we are happy to announce that we have plenty of food for anyone in need, so please spread the word!!! COVID-19 has really kept us on out toes in some unexpected ways, 1 of which is that we very quickly had to move all food distribution outside into the front yard! In the mostly good weather it’s been quite pleasant, HOWEVER, there isn’t any internet outside, which had us at a momentary standstill. We rely on NYC’s Plentiful App to register and check in our Food Pantry shoppers. Buying a Hotspot fixed the issue, but the cost of this miraculous gadget and the monthly service ...for it is an unexpected expense that we need help with. Other pandemic-related costs beyond our usual budget are things like toner and paper to help get critical safety and service info to our guests, etc..... While the church building may be closed for meetings and worship, the Hunger Program is working hard to continue to to provide food for our neighbors during this pandemic. Things are changing quickly, which has meant planning for one thing and then switching it up. So for now, here are some details: Wednesday's dinner and Thursday's pantry will both operate on a take out basis at the usual hours: Dinner on Wednesday from 6-7pm Pantry on Thursday from 4-7pm ... Our primary concern is that we will be able to continue to operate for the long-run. This means being very careful about virus prevention and cross training. For the meantime, we will operate with very small volunteer shifts in order to keep a safe distance between one another. We are very grateful for the generosity that so many of our neighbors have demonstrated over the past few days by reaching out to us about volunteering. Thank you! Here's what's been going on for us: we do not know how long this will continue or how many people will need food - either this week or in the coming weeks. We also want to keep everyone as healthy as possible. Our hope is that everyone will stay healthy, but we also want to be prepared in case either a staff person or volunteer is exposed to the virus at some point. Thus, we are in the process of cross training and developing teams of back up volunteers who can be activated if needed. The primary responsibly of the people on the backup team(s) is to stay healthy and be prepared to continue operations. It isn't glamourous. It isn't actually *doing* anything. In fact, it means not doing things so that you can continue to stay healthy. But it is a VERY important task, because the back up teams would be the difference between continuing operations and having to shut down.
