Halsey House Bed & Breakfast

Why, oh why, didn't we have this enlarged and on the wall at Halsey House from Day 1. Great fun. Dave Blake learned to make the most divine gluten-free muffins because when we started out, we bought them and they were as hard as any baseball. Dreadfully dry, without taste. His became somewhat "famous" and even people who weren't gluten-free adored them.

In the past weeks, we have thought a lot about you, the lovely people who have been guests in our home; especially those who’ve returned time and again and become our friends. We hope you had a joyous holiday season and will have a happy and healthy new year. As 2018 began to wrap up, The Davids also began to think about our years at Halsey House and what the future might hold. The realization that we aren’t getting any younger, has become all too evident. And, although w...e’ve loved every moment of living at Halsey House, and opening our home to you, there is a downside. By way of examples, we have two adorable grandchildren; one born in July and the other in September. As a result, July and September being busy months during the season in the Finger Lakes, we’ve missed every birthday. As avid kayakers, one would think, living less than two miles from Cayuga Lake, we’d be enjoying it regularly. Alas, since operating a bed and breakfast, there has simply been no time. Not once have our kayaks hit the water. Such is the life of an innkeeper. With the success of David Wren’s book, "Ardrossan: The Last Great Estate on the Philadelphia Main Line," published in 2017 by Bauer and Dean, and the new offers he is getting and David Blake yearning to have greater expression in the culinary arts, we find ourselves at a stalemate and have decided it is time to chart a different course. Indeed, it is bittersweet to be making this decision. We have enjoyed every minute of our time here, and as you are aware, we know how to throw a good party but the day has come to close the business. Please stay in touch by following us on Facebook. Happy Thanksgiving to all of our friends, neighbors and guests. The Wall Street Journal has just come out with its list of good wines for your holiday meal and of course, Finger Lakes wines are included. One of our favorites on the list is the Rkatsiteli from the Dr. Konstantin Frank' vineyard /winery. That said, a nice dry Riesling from Boundary Breaks, Bloomer Creek, Herman Weimer, Silver Thread or Heart and Hand would stand up well to your bird and all the sides. No matter your taste, Finger Lakes Vineyards and Wineries have something you will love so "bottoms up" and enjoy this national holiday and give thanks for all that you have.

Our good friends Bruce and Diane at Boundary Breaks Winery and Vineyard have the right idea; we'll do our best to enjoy that wine after an early vote on Tuesday. Cheers and thank you. We are BoundaryBreakers.

A BIG shoutout "welcome" to our new neighbor from across the lake, Bet the Farm Winery. Kit and Nancy bring delicious wine, hospitality experience and knowledge of this wine producing region and how to produce good wine and now offer two tasting rooms, one here and one in Aurora. We are thrilled to see Trumansburg/Ulysses garner yet another reason for a visit.

Our Fall color has been pretty bland this year but the beauty of our Taughannock Falls can not be diminished; great shot by a neighbor.

Lovey 2 hour drive thru the rural countryside from Halsey House to Norwich and a fun spot to visit.

What a lovely time we had with our friends last week here at Halsey House. And what a terrific compliment to the Finger Lakes; Thanks so much, Adam.

The 6th Annual Red Bryd Cider Dinner at Hazelnut Kitchen made for a great evening of delicious food, crisp and refreshing apple beverages and fun with old and new friends.
