Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Adirondackers show'em how it's done in years like this one.

Anyone remember this? It started around 1960 and was eventually folded into the Hamilton County News, now known as the Hamilton County Express.

Hamilton County History 18.11.2020

In honor of Veterans Day, here is one of the few surviving photos of John Bennett of Hope (pictured here with his son Frank), whose story as a Civil War hero has been overshadowed by the travails of his unfortunate wife, Sarah. John mustered in before the draft at the age of 18 along with his brother Isaac. The two were eventually captured at the Battle of Ream's Station, before winding up at a military hospital in Annapolis. Following this they rejoined the fight and saw action at Five Forks, Sailor's Creek and Appomattox, and were still on the lines when word came that Lee had surrendered. It is incredible to imagine what these men saw before they turned 21, and I often wonder what they would think to see the flag of their enemy flown so casually in the present day.
