On this day Alexander Hamilton was born. As a member of Congress, Hamilton was instrumental in creating the new Constitution. As co-author of the Federalist Papers, he was indispensable in the effort to get the Constitution adopted. As the first Secretary of the Treasury (1789-95), he devised plans for funding the national debt, securing federal credit, encouraging expansion of manufacturing, and organizing the federal bank. As an integral member of Washington's cabinet, he developed the concept of "implied powers," which allowed the federal government to do things in support of the Constitution, that were not specifically spelled out in it.
Alexander Hamilton created the tools for the success of the United States. From his humble beginnings as an orphan on the Caribbean island of Nevis, he became George Washington's right-hand man. Join us on January 9th for a virtual presentation via our Facebook page at hamiltongrangeNPS and find out more about this controversial founder and the country home that he built on his Harlem estate. #AlexanderHamilton was a well known #NewYorker. Like most New Yorkers #Hamilton would have rented and would not own his own home until 1802. Some of the known residence he would have rented are as follows: 63 Pine St., 26 Broadway, 58 Partition St. (later Fulton St.), 54 Cedar Street and 122 William Street.
#OTD in 1783 soon to be President George #Washington would announce his resignation as commanding general of the Continental Army. This would take place in #FrauncesTavern in New York where he would have gathered with his military officers.
Join us this Saturday.
After Alexander #Hamilton's death, his wife Elizabeth Hamilton would continue to own The #Grange for almost another 30 years. The home would exchange many different hands and would eventually end with the Ward family. William Greene Ward, a tea merchant, would purchase the home after the previous owners had the home repossessed. William Ward died in 1848, but his widow, Abby Hall, their children, and grandchildren continued to use the Grange as their family summer home up until 1876. By then, Mrs #Ward had fallen into debt and it was repossessed by the Emigrant's Bank.
#OTD in #1783 we commemorate the day the #British Army would evacuate New Yok City from the island of Manhattan and would be remembered as #EvacuationDay. Once the British troops left the fort, they occupied in New York the U.S. troops sought to remove the British flag. However, thanks to British soldiers' greasing the flagpole and cutting its halyards this proved to be quite a difficult task. After failed attempts to scale the pole, ultimately someone used wooden cleats to successfully climb and raise the American flag in place of Britain’s. This triumphant symbol sparked the first Evacuation Day celebrations, which went on to last several days.
