Kids and cows are enjoying this first warm day. A glimmer of spring coming

Hardy Family Farm 10.04.2021

We finished lambing season on Friday afternoon! Overall a very successful season! We lambed out 13 ewes. We had 7 sets of triplets and 30 lambs total! So far we have one little lamb that's a part time bottle lamb she nurses from her momma and from a bottle which the girls love! Ella named her Cherry Sue. Now on to calving season in a couple weeks!

These are the last of the calves on milk. They are in the process of getting weaned. This means they won't be getting milk much longer but they get free choice grain, hay and water as well as grass so they don't mind to much! Once they are fully weaned we will combine them with the other group of calves that are already fully weaned.

These beautiful rows are baleage. Baleage is hay we mow and wrap in plastic when it is still about 50% moisture. The moisture and the plastic wrap creates the correct environment for the feed to ferment, now we have a stable hopefully high quality feed to feed the cows in the winter! Of course there are many other facts such as quality/maturity of the grass when it's mowed, how fast it gets baled, the weather and so many more! But that's the game we play all summer trying to make enough feed until next year. #farmlife #organicvalley #familyfarm #organicfarming #knowyourfarmer

This morning one of our cows had a difficult calving also known as a dystocia. The calf was coming tail first, no feet! (Usually a calf presents itself front feet and nose) Aaron was able to get the feet out and we pulled the calf out backwards. Decided to reach in to check her and she had a twin also backwards. A little work and we were able to get the second calf out. So we have two healthy bull calves! Sabrina the cow is doing great too!
