Happy #InternationalChildrensBookDay! .. Here at HCM, we have lots of children’s books in our permanent collection; some of which currently sit on display in the Hart-Cluett House! Swipe to check ‘em out! .. #DidYouKnow it really wasn’t until the late 19th and early 20th centuries where we begin to see the rise of children’s literature as we know it today? This time period is often referred to as the Golden Age of Children’s Literature. It’s also quite common for children...’s books to be referred to as juveniles or juvenile literature. .. Do you have a favorite book from your childhood? Let us know in the comments below See more

#DidYouKnow that ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas was first published here in Troy #OnThisDay in 1823? . . Yup! 197 years ago, the Troy Sentinel Newspaper would publish A Visit from St. Nicholas anonymously. The famous poem, now better known as ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas, still remains authorless. ..... Though there is a long acceptance of Clement Clark Moore as it’s true author, there is debate on whether or not he actually wrote it. *dun dun DUNNN * Some claim that it was actually Henry Livingston Jr. who wrote the poem and that Moore simply took the credit. .. While we may never know who the true author was, ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas remains a popular holiday favorite! .. What holiday(s) do you celebrate? 1: Twas the Night Before Christmas, HCM collection 2: A Visit from St. Nicholas as it appeared in the Dec. 23, 1823 edition of the Troy Sentinel newspaper. Sneak Peek! You will here more about this amazing photograph collection in January ! In the meantime, a little gift for you all ! The first image is a view of South Troy taken in 1931 prior to demolition for a new bridge over the Wynantskill and the building of the Menands Bridge ! If you are familiar with the retaining wall at the foot of Mill Street showing the Burden Water Wheel Mural, imagine that is where the photographer stood with his back to the hill. The view is looking south on Burden Avenue. You can see the steeple of St. Michaels Church on Stowe Avenue. The building on the left is the horse barn for the Troy and Lansingburgh Trolley. The second image is a view looking up Mill Street from Burden Avenue. Again the building on the right is the Troy and Lansingburgh horse trolley barn. Don't miss the dog on the stoop !

#Repost from our @hartcluett_rising_leaders : @magpie519 Hey History/Drinking/Drinking History Nerds! Did you know the Vampiro was invented as a cool refresher to combat hot days at a Mexican roadside vegetable stand? .. This Mexican cousin of the Bloody Mary was invented almost 40 years ago by Oscar Hernandez, a local roadside vegetable vendor in the tiny agricultural village of San Luis Soyatlan on the southern shore of Lake Chapala. The cocktail was originally offere...d as a complimentary incentive to keep regular customers coming back since San Luis Soyatlan wasn’t much of a destination back then, and didn’t even have many people passing through. .. Once word began to spread about the delicious and refreshing beverages more people began to make the trip out to try them for themselves, and eventually the concoction developed quite the following. People make the trek out just for these colorful drinks which were named because their bright red color makes it look like people are drinking blood. Hernandez still sells the cocktails from the same roadside stand, so for practical purposes they are served in a plastic bag tied closed around a straw so they won’t spill in people’s cars. .. From a give-away item to encourage customer loyalty to a tourist attraction in its own right that requires an assembly-line to meet demand, this drink has definitely benefited from (or maybe even contributed to!) the new surge in tourism in the area. .. Thirsty for more Drinking History? There's still time to get your tickets to our Virtual Drinking History event "Boos and Booze: Things that go bump in the night" TONIGHT @ 7 PM. .. Tickets can be purchased at hartcluett.org/tickets/boosandbooze. Link in bio!!! .. The Vampiro -1 oz tequila - c. tomato juice -2 tbsp. orange juice -1 tbsp. lime juice -1 tbsp. finely chopped onion -3 thin slices of fresh hot pepper -2 dashes of Worcestershire sauce -4 oz grapefruit soda Rim a glass with salt. Add all ingredients except soda to a cocktail shaker with ice, shake, and allow to steep a few min. Strain into rimmed glass with ice, garnish with lime.

On December 14, 1911, the Morner Family was killed in what would become quite the sensational murder case in Rensselaer County and still remains unsolved to this day. .. Some sources list an Italian Farm Hand and a blood stained hatchet as responsible for the murders but those sources also indicate that reasoning behind the gruesome killings of the Morner family were (and still are) largely unknown. .. Do we think the Italian Farm Hand did it? And what were his motives?... Why the Morner family? So many questions! .. Wanna hear more stories like this one?
