Helping Hounds Dog Rescue 11.05.2021

Like so many of us, Bently and Sophie had a great life and could not have possibly anticipated how that life would be forever changed by the COVID-19 pandemic. One day they were happily enjoying the simple comforts of home, the next their human parents were hospitalized, fighting for their lives. Sadly, mom did not survive and dad came home to crushing medical bills. As he picked up more hours at work to pay the bills, Bently and Sophie found themselves alone in an empty h...ouse for long hours and a dad who was too tired when he was there. At ages 10 and 11, their human dad thought no one would want them. He also knew that life as it now was did not begin to meet their needs. So, with a broken heart, he made the vet appointment to send them to his beloved wife. As fate would have it, our TX Underdog partners heard of their story and offered a ticket north where these two poodles could begin again with a new family, in a new home. Our Uncle Roger fund paid to get them ready for the trip - we thank you for helping us help dogs like these. We are hoping there is someone who would want to take them both so they don't lose the bond they have with each other after all the loss they have had. One adoption fee covers it for both - a BOGO, if you will. Please share them and help us find their home. They will arrive Saturday, April 17th.

We have one adoption that was finalized on this rainy Monday! Tina, now Fiona, has a big fenced yard where she can run and play. There is a dog trainer already lined up to help mom learn, and she has lots of dog friends to meet!

Just 1 adoption to report on this beautiful spring day! Aski found himself a family that will keep him company and enjoy all his silly antics with him all day long. Mom and dad are retired and he has a human brother that is over the moon in love with him already. They have a fenced in yard for playtime and will enjoy leisurely walks around the neighborhood.

Aski. Oh where to begin to help you understand the rare, unique and beautiful boy this dog is. To be honest, he gave us a run for our money in the beginning. His fear or hatred of the leash along with his big size made us a bit hesitant with him. He’s over that now. He thought it through, decided he liked us so rather than stiffen, snap, or give us the side eye when we need to put one on, he just lays down. Then rolls over. Goes dead weight. Once the battle is won, h...e’s up on his feet and prances his way to the door right beside you. Truth be told, he doesn’t need the leash as much as most because beside you is the only place he wants to be. He is a dream to walk. A natural at heel. We put him in the training room. He studied how we came and went. He played with the door handle for a couple of days before figuring out how to open it. He lets his friends out. He lets himself out. But only if no one is in there with him. Once loose, he just comes over behind the desk and takes his place lounging at our feet. We thought he would enjoy fresh air in the outdoor play yard. He does, especially so when there was snow on the ground. But he learned to flip the latch on the first gate and push the one on the second. We would find him at the door asking politely to come back in. We don’t recommend trying to outsmart him - locking the latch only got us a broken gate. We gave up. Or gave in. He just wanders the rescue now and is never far from someone. He doesn’t see much point in fetching a ball. He had a moment of throwing a stuffy around. Until it squeeked. Then he seemed genuinely sorry for any harm he caused and would only gently lay beside it. We thought if we could put his door opening skills to use with something useful - like fetch me a soda, he could sell himself more easily. In true Aski fashion, he tried to please us, but you can see from the photo after the great lengths we went to to get him to tug the towel, he gently just held it. When we hear the story from his foster mom of how he was her shadow we are not surprised. When we heard he figured out she always took her keys with her when she left, it wasn’t at all shocking he hid them. Someone is going to enjoy a lifetime of friendship like no other. Please share him so we can send him home.

We are so incredibly grateful for the opportunity to participate in the most successful Staffworks Save A Life campaign to date! The pandemic sent many non profits into a tail spin frantically trying to recreate and revamp entire fundraising plans. We were no exception. We are so grateful to all of you who donated, volunteered, shared our virtual fundraising efforts and adopted our beautiful dogs. You blew us away with your support ending a difficult year with renewed o...ptimism, not only reaching the campaign goals, but surpassing it. We are excited and proud to announce that donations, sponsorships and adoptions totaled $192,342.36 making us eligible for the full Staffworks match of an additional $30k! We are blown away and will begin 2021 a bit more confident in our ability to adapt to the ever changing and uncertain times we still find ourselves in. Please join us in thanking Staffworks for the amazing support they gave to 39 organizations across 17 counties and 2 states.

We will be welcoming a new group into the HHDR family from Alabama and helping them find loving homes for their beautiful pups. It takes quite a bit to get these dogs ready for traveling, so if you are able, help get them started on the right paw by making a donation to launch their partnership with HHDR! They have met all our standards and we cannot wait to welcome their pups. Give their page a like and follow along!

Our rescue will be closed January 1, 2021, to bring in the New Year! It seems more than a year has passed since moving into our new home, yet it was January of this one. So full of promise and optimism of all we would be able to do in our new space. No sooner had we gotten the rhythm of how to run it when COVID-19 shut it down. Like so many, we look back in a sort of dazed wonder at the twists and turns, the ups and downs, the joys and the sorrows and let out a sigh of r...elief as we wish the year farewell and look forward to the New Year with hope in our hearts. We don't know where to begin in thanking all of you that helped us navigate these uncharted waters. We began the year sitting in the ER with a broken Christmas puppy and with your help, saw her through surgeries and rehab and on to a happy life with a family who adores her. We end the year with sweet Tinker, seen here in photos, who was returned to our care after a 2-year adoption and carrying double her body weight. Now 9 years old, the extra pounds and some really bad teeth have taken a toll on her heart which has begun to fail. We are hopeful we caught it early enough and with diet and exercise, careful monitoring of her medications and a foster mom determined to give her a few more years of living we will see her through to her happy life as well. In between, we met thousands of beautiful dogs and the families that would welcome them into their hearts and homes. Admittedly, most of them we only met for a quick hello as 2020 brought with it an unprecedented rate of adoption. Turns out it was a good year to be a homeless dog. We provided respite care for the pets of owners dealing with health issues. We celebrated our successes and grieved our losses. We learned how to fundraise when the ability to be out in the community we love was taken, how to stay connected better to all of you who support us in so many ways. We hope before 2021 comes to an end, we will be able to gather again, to welcome you all in to see your donations and support at work. We hope the community programs we had planned will be able to begin. We end the year with a grateful heart that what started out in panic and so much uncertainty is ending with knowledge that together, we can make it through anything. If you would like to make a donation to help us continue our life saving and life changing programs and to help dogs like Tinker get the medical care they need, your gift made today will count in the Staffworks matching program! Your donation will have an even greater impact on making a difference. If you want to share photos of your best friend who helped you get through the crazy upside down year that was 2020, we would love to see them. Share them in the comments. Happy New Year to all of you and your families. May 2021 keep you safe and healthy and may it give all of us a return to some sense of normalcy.

Toys not only helped to socialize our pups, they helped to bring comfort as well. When you're all tuckered out but everyone else is still playing, a toy makes for a wonderful cuddle buddy. There is still a couple more hours to help fill the pumpkin patch with toys! Sponsor a toy or two or twenty and then tune in tomorrow at 4pm for the finale event of Pumpkins & Puppies. If your toy is picked by a puppy - you win! Best thing - each of our pups will go home with a bag full of toys to help get their new life started right. https://www.helpinghoundsdogrescue.org/trickortreat

Please allow me to introduce myself .... My name is Zena and I’m a year old, female, 41 pound mix of some kind. Most people say I am either collie or sight hound, but not even I know for sure. What I do know is I don’t want an ordinary life. I want an adventurous one. I like to keep busy playing with my dog friends and enjoy my walks and playtime with the humans too. I don’t need much sleep - I figure there will be plenty of time for naps when I’m older, but right now I ...want to experience all that life has to offer. I hope I get a human who likes to run or hike and spend plenty of time outdoors taking in all the beauty and wonder of the world. A dog who likes to play would be fun to live with, but those cats are annoying - they don’t play right and make me angry. I’m the last one here at HHDR waiting for just the right person to come and make me their best friend. I’m a very good girl, just born with lots of energy. Please share my story and help send me home.
