How often do you get to wade in a pond built in the 1700s and help restore it? Here’s your chance. Cedarmere was the Hempstead Harbor home of America’s first internationally known poet, William Cullen Bryant (1794 1878). In addition, he was the editor of the New York Evening Post (started by Alexander Hamilton) for 50 years, played a key role in Lincoln becoming President; championed the creation of Central Park and the Metropolitan Museum of Art; was a botanist (even developed his own pear species); an avid hiker; founded a homeopathic college; was close friends with Hudson River School artists; an avid abolitionist, etc. etc. He travelled all around the world but the place he loved the most was Cedarmere on Hempstead Harbor. We owe it to him to keep his pond vibrant!
