Earlier this month, we received a special delivery of toys from Special Agent Eric Cotter of the CSX Police Department. We enlisted the help of Herkimer Middle School Counselor Heather Paul and Herkimer Elementary School teachers Vicki Burns, Julie Irizarry, Alexis McGovern and Gloria Piazza to find some children for us to visit...and they came through. We were able to deliver Christmas gifts to 45 wonderful, and very thankful children in our Village...!!!

On Wednesday, 13 of our wonderful Elementary School students had the opportunity to Shop with a Cop for some early Christmas presents. This event was made possible through a grant from WalMart (special thanks to Mgr Corey Worhall and AP Mgr Orlando Martinez for the grant). This year, we had an additional donation from Americu (thanks to Mgr Mike Cook and Joanne Nitka). Our incredible Elementary staff (Principal Rene Vogt, Assistant Principal Cristi Paragi and Social Workers Kathy Orts and Sara Lamana) provide us with our shopping partners for the evening and stand by with us throughout the event. It is always difficult to determine who has more fun...the students of the Officers... !!!

ADDED: September 24, 2020 Incident at Wal*Mart On Wednesday, September 23rd at approximately 6:25pm, Herkimer Police responded to Wal*Mart for a possible attempted abduction. Upon arrival, Officers spoke with a 12 year old male and his mother along with a witness to the incident. Once a description of the male was provided, Officers searched the store while other Officers viewed store cameras to ascertain his location. At no time did the child or his mother indicate to O...fficers that the male had physically grabbed or attempted to detain the child. The male, who was intoxicated, was located and interviewed. During the interview, he became belligerent and was removed from the store to continue the investigation. Video of the incident showed that there was no physical contact between the male and the child. Upon further conversation with the mother and the child, it was learned that the male offered to purchase the child a toy, while in the presence of the mother, which upset the mother. The mother guided the child away from the male and told him to leave them alone, which was witnessed by a customer. Officers continued to speak with the child and the mother, as well as any witnesses. Officers advised the mother that a statement would be needed to pursue charges against the male however she decided not to provide a statement at that time. The male refused to leave the property after being directed to by Wal*Mart staff and Officers on scene. He was then arrested for trespass, transported to the station, processed for Trespass (violation) and released on an Appearance Ticket, returnable to Village Court on a later date. Additional charges may be pending therefore the name of the individual will not be released at this time. Additional information will be provided as it arises. *****ARREST***** As previously posted, we received three complaints of an individual claiming to be a Police Officer, displaying a badge and attempting to obtain cash for unpaid fines. During the course of the investigation, it was determined that GARY PERKETT (41) of Herkimer was that individual. Based on the information and evidence gathered, Officers obtained an Arrest Warrant for PERKETT. On Monday, September 14th, Officers located PERKETT and placed him under arrest.... He was charged with: Criminal Impersonation in the 1st Degree (3 counts); Criminal Tampering in the 2nd Degree; Burglary in the 2nd Degree; Petit Larceny; Unlawful Imprisonment in the 2nd Degree He was arraigned and remanded to the Herkimer County Correctional Facility in lieu of $5000 cash bail. PERKETT will appear in Village Court at a later date to address these charges as well as his additional fourteen (14) open criminal cases consisting of 27 charges, most involving some form of a fraudulent scam.
