Music in Film: The Reel Deal marks film producer and drummer Richard Baratta’s triumphant return to jazz after a 30+ year diversion, during which time Baratta became a celebrated film producer of Hollywood hits such as The Irishman, Joker and The Wolf of Wall Street. This album represents the coalescence of Baratta’s two seemingly disparate worlds, a celebration of cinema through the lens of jazz. While this album is Baratta’s proper debut studio recording, Baratta was ...born into a musical household in Poughkeepsie, NY, studied with jazz great Jack DeJohnette and cut his teeth with gigs in the Catskills before landing in Manhattan in the mid ‘70s. In NYC he forged associations with musicians like John Stubblefield, Vernon Reid and Hal Galper, embracing the lifestyle of a gigging jazz musician. However, the desire for career stability led to Baratta leaving the jazz scene for his first forays into the film industry. Baratta went from being a location scout for Desperately Seeking Susan to executive producer on 2019’s immensely popular and critically acclaimed Joker, being involved with more than 50 top films in-between, including Donnie Brasco, five Spiderman movies, Indiana Jones & the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3. A gig at the famed Kaufman Astoria Studios in Queens, NY, rekindled Baratta's interest in performing and before he knew it he had a working band the band heard here and plenty of dates on the calendar. Featuring alto saxophone phenom Vincent Herring, guitarist Paul Bollenback and pianist / arranger Bill O'Connell the band burns, boils and cooks over a low flame on 12 tunes from classic soundtracks composed by Nino Rota, Burt Bacharach, Henry Mancini and others. Baratta says, Being away as long as I've been away, and then to be in the fold with some of these amazing musicians I've been playing with, I'm like a kid in a candy store right now. After hearing his Savant debut album, you'll probably develop a sweet tooth of your own for his music. JD Allen - TOYS / DIE DREAMING in The Wall Street Journal https://www.wsj.com//valentine-and-toys-die-dreaming-revie

HighNote Records 08.08.2020

Happy Friday! Today, JD Allen's new album - TOYS / Die Dreaming is released! Take a listen to a track from the album.... You’re My Thrill You’re My Thrill has been a favorite of jazz players since it was written, with great instrumental versions by Benny Golson, Pepper Adams and, perhaps best-known, Chet Baker. JD Allen adds his name to the list with an insightful rendition which is a bit unsettling in its intensity. A vibrato-less statement of the melody, almost personifying the lyric’s you send chills right through me, is the first of many highlights and provides an indication of things to come. After the opening chorus, Allen seems to reduce the tune to its smallest thematic materials and then use them as a springboard for his striking choruses. Bassist Ian Kenselaar takes a solo spot which continues to develop Allen’s motivic approach before the saxophone returns to finish the track, maintaining the mood and intensity to the very last note. --- commentary by RJO Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/track/2M305kBVqKkb2JwCs4TcLf Apple Music: https://music.apple.com/co/album/youre-my-thrill/1523363471 Qobuz: (album) https://www.qobuz.com//toys-die-dreaming-jd-/lrxvwhld5nzwb

Happy Friday! Today, Conrad Herwig's new album - The Latin Side of Horace Silver is released! Take a listen to a track from the album.... Song for My Father The exuberant piano of Michel Camilo weaves in and out of this classic tune displaying his full virtuosic abilities of lightning-fast runs, jackhammer chords and wildly ambidextrous poly-rhythms. While the Dominican pianist’s musical personality is omnipresent, Igor Butman takes a tenor turn notable for an exuberance of his own in the form of a few deftly placed cackle-attacks. Next the leader is in the spotlight taking an imaginative solo with impressive machine gun-like repeated notes punctuated by some treacherous leaps cutting in like hatchet blows. Finally, before the band enters to take the tune out, conga player Richie Flores delivers a jaw-dropping solo over a modal vamp in the piano and bass. --- commentary by RJO Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/track/11WFMu6cv4HKK06cUi357W Apple Music: https://music.apple.com//song-for-my-father-fe/1524060482 Qobuz: (album) https://www.qobuz.com//the-latin-side-of-hor/q7e2kn4czvc1b

The G Thing from JD Allen's new album TOYS / Die Dreaming. The G Thing is an evocative tone painting which could serve as an appropriate soundtrack for a gritty, film noir detective movie. A free tempo opening sets the feel of the entire track, which somehow manages to be sultrily hot and minor-key cool at the same time. Once Allen establishes the tone, Ian Kenselaar sets a walking bass line into motion that accompanies the saxophonist’s series of improvisations. This is... Allen’s tune all the way with no solos from his colleagues and JD makes the most of his rarely taken time alone in the spotlight. The free tempo from the opening returns and then leaves the bass and drums to finish the remarkable track playing the walking bass as a lonely duet, almost as if Allen himself has walked off into the distance, having said all he needed to say. --- commentary by RJO The album will be available tomorrow, 8/28/2020. https://open.spotify.com/track/2u250dfFDmE1nL96fSsRAQ

Peace from Conrad Herwig's new release The Latin Side of Horace Silver Peace is a gorgeous ballad from Silver’s 1959 Blowin’ the Blues Away LP, which not only gave us the classic title track but also the jazz standard, Sister Sadie. The horns alone begin the performance of Peace with a beautifully-harmonized four bars before the rhythm section enters and sets the tune in motion. Lush harmonies and imaginative voice leading are featured throughout with Alex Sipiagin se...tting the mood with the mellow tone of his fluglehorn. O’Connell, Butman and Herwig take inspired solos with each making the most of the ecstatic tone of the arrangement before the band enters for the last chorus, now reharmonized with astonishing skill. At the very end, Herwig takes a short solo cadenza, highlighted by a handful of high-flying (and somewhat Freudian) glissandos before the final chord. --- commentary by RJO The album will be available on Friday, 8/28/2020. https://open.spotify.com/track/6NOdUX3BsoVJz9ZZjK4kWx
