You have been a brave leader challenging all of your ideas about yourself, dance, the world, year after year. Anna has always been known by her opening story into H+ of only wanting to photograph and then being told she would actually need to learn Hip-Hop... Dance to do justice to archiving the art form. Well, let’s just say Anna has turned herself into a quadruple threat over a decade of training as Hip-Hop Dancer, Photographer, Cinematographer, and Editor. We’re proud of you for all the work you’ve done internally and externally to build yourself into the leader, woman, and artist you are today and we’re excited how you will continue to embrace and refine what makes you, you! "Hip-Hop was birthed out of the civil rights movement. It is the voice of the voiceless and oppressed. Our dances are not separate from our struggle against socioeconomic oppression, they are reflective of it. To take part in this cultural invention is to acknowledge and recognize this as fact. Yes hip-hop is open to all cultures. But that does not mean you can take ownership over this cultural art. Central Park is open to the public but we know that you cannot start cutting... down the trees and changing the landscaping. We know that we don't own Central Park. We know that we are partaking in the freshly manicured lawns, swings, benches, trees etc. that someone else created. As guests of the park, if we deface, change, add, litter or break the park's rules there are fines, consequences and repercussions. We understand that usage of the park is contingent upon our behavior within it. This makes sense to a vast majority of people. Hip-hop and any other cultural invention is the same. The black and latino cultural heritage in America created something beautiful and opened it to ALL to enjoy. We shared our creation with the world! To take part in our dance though you must also interact with our struggle. Right now is a perfect time to engage with our struggle firsthand as we are on the frontlines of fighting endemic racism and the brutality that stems from it. As a guest in this cultural invention you cannot simply engage with our rhythm without also engaging with our blues. Peace, love unity and having fun are the core tenets of our culture. I would add that RESPECT is also tantamount. Joining us in our fight against brutality and other unjust practices shows that respect and brings honor to your involvement in our dance. Dancers have immense perseverance and after half a year in quarantine, we have way too many reasons to celebrate our strength, resilience, and passion! We didn't let our tiny bathroom mirror or our unspacious studio apartment stop us from doing what we love. We danced in our tiny green boxes in Zoom and performed to people near and far on our IG LIVEs. And that's a win! Not only that but this September marks Hispanic Heritage Month and we're celebrating all the amazing dancer...s, choreographers, and dance executives who are proud of their cultural heritage! We'll feature international dancers and dancers right in the heart of our beloved New York City, dancers of our culture, Hip-Hop, and dancers from our neighboring genres like Latin Dance and Commercial.
