Went ice fishing with my daughter Nadia and good friend Tom Brooking for a few hrs in the afternoon on Oneida and had a great time, my daughter caught her first walleye through the ice. And there were many flags to keep her interest.

Hi there fellow hunters . This hunting season has been warmer than I have ever seen in the last 32 years . Here are a few tips on how to cool your harvest down or take care of it before it spoils. Below you’ll also find some tips that will make your taxidermist happy. Remember, taxidermy starts with you and how you handle the animal before drop off. 1. If you are processing it yourself cut it up as soon as possible after harvest even if it’s still warm. Your meat will age onc...e you start thawing a package in the fridge. So there is no need to hang it first. 2.if you have to hang it get some ice bags end place one each in two non scented trash bags and make sure that the water can’t escape fron the bags. Place these in the cavity. Water will make your meat spongy if it can escape the bags. 3 your best choice would be a walk-in cooler. One of the questions everyone has is what’s your turnaround time Turnaround time and quality can be shortened and improved with your help.. Every time a cape needs repair work caused by the individual handling the skin before it reaches the taxidermist adds repair time to the process. Take that times number of projects divid it and all of a sudden there is a month of just repair work. That said be aware of the friend who said I know how to cape it most of us Tacidermist cringe when we hear that. . If you know how to tube the front legs for a shoulder mount we’d prefer that. Other wise ask us how or look it up on line I have a video on my FB page . Don’t leave almost the entire neck in we don’t eat that neck even if it’s offered and it’s extra time added to the skinning process. 1 please don’t Tag through ears. 2 don’t make the gut cut past brisket towards head stop at the sternum. Yes, it’s difficult to cut the windpipe like that but practice makes perfect. 3. Don’t drag with four wheeler a less it’s on a sled. 4 while it’s still warm you can lose hair and create bald spots if you rough handle the anilmal while loading or dragging it. 5. If it was gut shot try not to cross contaminate the intestinal fluids to the cape these bacteria can cause the cape to rot within hrs. 6. If you bring it to get processed make sure the place doesn’t smell like a garbage dumpthere is a destruct difference between a blood smell amd rot smell, once your deer is dragged through the rotting blood on the floor not only will you contaminate the hide but could also contaminate your meat. 7. Get it to the taxidermist as soon as possible, don’t wait for a week before we get it. I know this is a lot to think about but it beats losing the meat to bacteria or worse you getting sick. As a taxidermist I appreciate anything you can do to cut down our repair time. Thank you for your tome reading this. The suggestions above is how I prefer harvests to be handled ask your taxidermist how he wants you to . Good luck this season and stay safe.

Hirsch Taxidermy is Awesome! After seeing some of Kerstens work on Facebook I decided to take my buck to him and I was very impressed. You can tell when you mee...t Kersten that he loves what he does and is passionate about his work. I could not be happier with the finished mount. The detail in his work is incredible! I have had deer mounted by other people before and they do not even compare. All of the mounts I have done from now on will definitely be going to Kersten. Thanks again for an awesome job! See more
