Ukulele master Randy Pollok leads a six-week beginner class focused on learning basic chords and songs. Our first Hochstein at Home All-School Recital of the semester was held on Saturday, October 17. Instrumental and vocal students of all ages performed, with friends and family members watching on Zoom from as far away as Oklahoma and Michigan. A couple of students submitted videos (one was attending a sports event that same day), and two of Dave Chisholm’s remote studio rock bands submitted group recordings. The musical selections included classical works by Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, and Viennese composer Maria Theresia von Paradis; a traditional folk song; a song from a current Broadway musical; and music by The Cranberries. For their first online video performance, the Hochstein Youth Singers of today, directed by Maryellen Giese, collaborated with their HYS counterparts from 2014 (via audio recording) for Hey you 50 States, we want you to VOTE! Based on part of Ray Charles’ Fifty Nifty United States, this virtual performance was edited by Jon Madden. Four present-day Youth Singers also sang in that 2014 concert: Caroline Fountain, Katy Gaul, Lucci Pagano, and Brynn Peters.
