These are beautiful words from Br. Steven Montes OMI who was a pre novice here at Holy Angels. His reflection is so worth the read. Please share if The Spirit moves you to do so. After Keitz asked if there was anything I wanted from Holy Angels I started to pray over it and realized that what I really wanted wasn’t possible to have. I wanted to be able to share my experiences of Holy Angels with the generations of Oblates that would follow me. To be able to point at a plac...e and say I remember having collaboration with Bob in this same dining room, recreating with the Oblate Associates in this Gigante room. I wanted to put my experiences of Oblate life into the living memory of Holy Angels just as the numerous stories of Oblates and parishioners surrounded me as I lived in that building: small in personnel but rich in life. As I continued over the weeks to pray I also realized that I have already received so much from Holy Angels that has become so central to my vision of Oblation that it has really shown itself in my ministry this year in Brownsville: the poor with their many faces coming together on the Isle of Misfit Toys. Just as Holy Angels was that special island for so many people I encountered in my first years of formation, I find myself seeking out the same types of people here: the teenager stuck in rehab after a suicide attempt, the PTSD stricken veteran who can’t find a place in the other parishes, the homeless woman who shouts/preaches (about what I am still not sure) across the street from sunrise to sunset and is utterly convinced she’s an angel. As I reflect on this small part of Christ’s flock, I think about Holy Angels and how my time there helped open my eyes to the beauty of these people. In this sense, I think I have already received my souvenir from Holy Angels, this part of my charism that wants me to seek out the unlikely or the down-and-outs, the misfits. And because this is tied so much to the Spirit’s movements, it is something much more valuable than any physical thing or stories I can pass on. I believe being on the other side of the country has helped me to keep Holy Angels closing in perspective, but at the same time it makes me unable to feel the brunt of what everyone there must be feeling as the days pass by until Saturday. Maybe it just hasn’t hit me that the next time I go to Buffalo the people will be scattered in the wind and I just can’t be permitted inside the building. Regardless, all this week I have been making my personal intention at mass for the people of Holy Angels: deceased and alive. Most I did not know but I still must be connected with because I was lucky to share, even if it was just for two years, in the living memory of Holy Angels.

#OblateYouth Buffalo. The brainchild of Fr. David Munoz OMI, we began as a collaboration of three parishes. One of our parishes, Holy Angels, had it’s final Mas...s yesterday. Established in 1851 when Bishop DeMazenod of Marsaille said yes to Bishop Timon of Buffalo, to send Missionaries from his order The Oblates of Mary Immaculate. 168 years of Oblate service and the longest continuous Oblate mission in the United States has closed its doors. We mourn this loss. Praised be Jesus Christ and Mary Immaculate. St. Eugene pray for us. See more
