From January 30 to January 31, 2020, the hall of church councils at the Moscow Christ the Savior cathedral hosted a plenum uniting all members of the Inter-Council Ass...embly. The ICA, founded in 2009 to draft position papers on a range of topics dealing with the external and the internal life of the Church, comprises 204 people: 81 bishops, 74 clerics (including 14 monks and 1 deacon), 12 abbesses, 1 rasaphor nun, 36 laymen and 20 laywomen. Seminary’s M.Div. program graduates first student Holy Trinity Orthodox Seminary is pleased to announce that on Sunday, May 31, 2020, Priest Daniel Franzen became the first candidate in the seventy-two-year history of the seminary to be awarded the graduate level degree of Master of Divinity, summa cum laude. Because of well-known restrictions, a limited format was used this year in place of the annual commencement. Fr. Daniel received academic scholarships for each of his t...hree semesters at Holy Trinity Seminary. On Friday, May 29, 2020, he successfully defended his thesis entitled Original Sin: A Challenge to Contemporary Orthodox Views from an Historical Perspective. Substantial interest was expressed by a good number of scholars, who were present at this premier public event via the internet. His Grace Bishop Luke, Rector, and Dr. Nicolas Schidlovsky, HTOS Dean, together with distinguished members of the board of trustees, the administration, and the student body, congratulate Fr. Daniel and his family on this occasion. Much gratitude is also due to the faculty of the Seminary itself, whose members have been so important during these formative academic years for Fr. Daniel. We would also like to acknowledge The Orthodox Pastoral School of Chicago, ROCOR’s Fund for Assistance, The Lukianov Family Foundation, The Col. George Codrea USMC Memorial Scholarship, and The St. Seraphim Scholarship. All of these organizations and their numerous benefactors have made this possible. Paschal Epistle of His Eminence, Metropolitan Hilarion, First Hierarch of the Russian Church Abroad Eminent Brother-Archpastors, Reverend Fathers, Dear Brothers and Sisters, CHRIST IS RISEN!... With the joy of God’s Kingdom, as we are "divinely glad, for Christ is risen" (from the Paschal Canon), I offer my Paschal greeting to all: both to those who have successfully completed the reclusion of their quarantine, celebrating now in the churches and communing of Christ’s Holy Mysteries; and also to those who yet abide in the desert of solitude and various restrictions, dedicating the better portion of their time to private prayer, spiritually beneficial reading, and interaction with loved ones. May the former and the latter both, in the words of St. John Chrysostom, "honor the day," receiving in their hearts the riches of God’s goodness! As I began to compose my greeting and sought pre-Paschal inspiration in the works of the ever-memorable Metropolitan Anastassy (Gribanovsky), who reposed 55 years ago, I opened a compendium of his writings and found the following words: "In the silence of the desert, your Paschal joy can be fuller, brighter, and more complete than ours, for it is not stolen away by the brilliant tumult with which we fill the Feast, rather than spending it in quiet and thoughtful contemplation of the great Paschal mystery and in serene and imperturbable peace." These instructive words of His Beatitude, Metropolitan Anastassy, remind us that, on the holy Paschal night, everyone is called to become an animate temple, in the depths of which he can and must feel the joy and triumph of the heavens, which glorify Christ the Giver of Life. Homily for Great and Holy Saturday by Monk Theodore "In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Dear Brothers!... Today, God lies in the tomb, not as one dead, but as one resting from the completion of a great work. In the silence of this great and holy day, Our Lord keeps His Sabbath, having rendered a new creation by the work of His mighty hands. In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth; today the heavens weep for their crucified King and the earth quakes in horror as it receives its Creator into the protective embrace of the cave. On the first day, He called light and darkness into being; today, the light of the world is seemingly extinguished and darkness reigns in the heart of man. On the second day, He divided the waters; today He Who turned back the Jordan and calmed the storm of Galilee is washed by the tears of the myrrh-bearers. On the third day, He called the dry land from the sea and brought forth the herbs and seeds, the trees and fruits of the earth; today, the root of Jesse, murdered upon the tree, is planted in the tomb as the seed of eternal life. On the fourth day, He called the great lights and the stars into being, the sun to rule by day and the moon by night; today, sun and moon turn their faces away in shame at the cruel murder of their Creator, bringing darkness upon the earth. On the fifth day, He brought forth the birds of the air and creatures of the sea; today, the birdsong has fallen silent in lamentation as their Master lies dead in the sepulcher. On the sixth day, He raised up the beasts of the land and made with His very own hands the crown of His creation: the man Adam, made in His divine image, breathing into him the breath of life; today, the Creator lies dead, slain by the hands of ungrateful Adam........"
