Almost finished with this two color gray and black marble venetian plaster. I put 6coats of plaster on this and it's as thin as a razor. The extra coats add depth and veins to the final polishing process. I put 36 hours into this wall to match the picture the customer wanted. This was sanded with 5 different grits, hand polished three times with a steel towel, two coats of wax sealant and polished three more times. Reflects like glass more daylight pictures to come after everything cures ...thank you Zach Moore for all of your hard work dealing with my OCD and assisting me. You are an absolute blessing. Furniture Refinishing, restoration, and decorative project season has begun. This is a project I just finished for Jake Laufer, one of the most honest, hardworking, talented, and personable contractors I always recommend to my customers. This is a 10 ft barn style door that Jake's customer wanted finished in a weathered white wash look. I felt that we could make this a living piece of functional art made to age in a way that reveals more color, patterns, and beauty as the ...years pass. Whenever I do decorative work I choose a number (a nod to my dad the accountant) that represents something meaningful to me or the client to work into my technique. I chose the biblical number three representing the holy trinity, the father, son, and the holy spirit in honor of the Christmas Season it was finished in. First I stained the raw wood with a custom mix of minwax classic gray stain and old masters weathered wood. I wanted a rich gray stain with hints of blue and other grayscale variants to give it depth. For the whitewashing I decided to use Benjamin Moore Murasco Vinyl Latex flat white paint diluted with water. This was also done in three light coats with hand brushing in abstract patterns that highlight the frame of door and give it the weathered look. This is a process that requires, brushing, wiping, and layering in thin coats to replicate the weathering of an old barn door exposed to the elements. The final touch is three brush strokes I put in random groupings to give the door even more depth and character. I then heat fixed the entire door with a heat gun..... This is how it becomes a living piece of art that the family living in the home will witness slowly changing through the daily routines of life. I did not put a polyurethane topcoat specifically so that the as the white slowly wears away more of the rich color underneathe is revealed in a pattern unique to the people who reside there. I triple coated the stain to ensure that the entire door had a rich base color of gray that wood naturally takes on as it ages. I also wanted to have an oil base coat that would not let the waterbased paint to soak in right away and give me the ability to use multiple techniques to create natural , yet rustically elegant look that only hand painted wood furniture gives to a room. I used vinyl latex as it is a flat that actually is cleanable to a degree because of vinyl. I heat fixed the entire project with a heatgun to ensure the latex adheres to stain. Through the years more of the rich gray will be revealed. This is a signature Home Artistry Decorative project.
