From Chef Kerry Beadle ACF Syracuse Chapter competes in Baron H. Galand Knowledge Bowl Competion A group of students representing the Syracuse Chapter of the Am...erican Culinary Federation recently competed in the Baron H. Garland regional Knowledge Bowl Competition held as part of the Chef Connect regional culinary conference in Atlantic City, New Jersey. This competition began in 1992 and this is the first time that the Syracuse chapter has been represented. The student team was made up of Jessica Czyz, Resort and Recreation Service major, SUNY Morrisville, Rose Thompson, Hospitality Management major, Onondaga Community College, Grace Beard, Hospitality Management major, Onondaga Community College and Kelsie Wilson, Nutrition and Dietetics major, Syracuse University. The team was coached by Joseph Visser, recent graduate of the Culinary Arts program at SUNY Morrisville. With assistance from the three colleges and a generous sponsorship from Nestles Corporation, the team traveled to Atlantic City on February 23 and 24 for the Jeopardy style competition. There were eight teams representing the Northeast region. The competition was a double elimination style tournament with teams being seeded based on a pre-test exam. The girls were very nervous going in as they had never seen or done anything similar to this. When the seedings were announced, the Syracuse team was seeded eighth, meaning that they would go up against the top seeded team in the first round. This news inspired the team to study extra hard over Saturday night and leading up to Sunday’s competition. The girls were matched up against Harrisburg Area Community College in the first round. The team did remarkably well and when the round was completed and the answer board was cleared, the two teams were completely knotted up at 150 points each. This meant that there would be one additional question to determine the winner. The question was read and the girls knew the correct answer but the Harrisburg team buzzed in first and gave the correct answer. The defeat meant that our team would go to the loser’s bracket and have to fight their way back. After some additional study time, the team competed against the ACF Big Apple team in round 2. This time the team better understood the game format and came out on the winning side of the round with an 80-20 victory. Again returning to their study room, the team was even more determined to keep moving on. In the third round, the girls were pitted against Owens Community College and the game board provided some very tough categories for both teams. Our team came out on the short end in this round and were eliminated from the tournament with the second loss. You would never know the outcome by the attitudes on the ride home as everyone was so thankful to have had the opportunity to experience this competition. All were in agreement that the knowledge and friendships created from this experience will carry on for a very long time. There was already talk of how to prepare for next year. The team wishes to thank; Syracuse University, Onondaga Community College, SUNY Morrisville, Nestles and the Syracuse Chapter of the ACF for sponsoring this event. See more
