HAPPY NATIONAL IRISH COFFEE DAY! A little history for you! Irish Coffee was invented at Foynes, a small town in the West of Ireland, in the 1940’s. Foynes was an airbase near Limerick, which by 1940, was handling large numbers of traveling American pas- sengers, including many American politicians and Hollywood stars. Foynes and their iconic flying boats are closely connected to Irish Coffee, playing a significant role in the invention of our favorite Irish cocktail. Of cour...se, as with anything in Ireland (and Syracuse), the weather played a role, too. In 1943, Brendan O’Regan opened a restaurant and coffee shop in the Foynes terminal building. Chef Joe Sheridan, originally from Castlederg, Co. Tyrone, was hired to run the kitchen. The restaurant catered to the important passengers passing through Foynes and worked to show people from around the world what Irish hospitality was all about. Late one night in the winter of 1943, a flight left Foynes for New York. After flying for several hours in bad weather, the captain de- cided to return to Foynes to wait for safer conditions. A Morse code message was sent to the Foynes control tower to inform them of their return. Joe and his staff were asked to prepare food and drink for the cold and tired passengers. Joe decided to prepare something unique to warm the passengers up. He brewed dark, rich coffee, added in some Irish Whiskey, some brown sugar, and floated freshly whipped cream on top of each cup. As the passengers enjoyed Sheridan’s creation, one American passenger said, Hey Buddy, is this Brazilian Coffee? No, said Joe, That’s Irish Coffee. The Irish Coffee became an instant hit at Foynes, but may never have become an international success, had the travel writer, Stanton Delaplane, not brought the recipe back to Jack Koeppler, who be- gan serving the Irish Coffee as a bartender at the Buena Vista Hotel in San Francisco. From its invention at Foynes airport in Ireland, raised to popularity at The Buena Vista Cafe in San Francisco, the classic Irish Coffee has found a home in Syracuse at Hoynes, expertly built by our bar team using quality ingredients. On Wednesday and Thursday we delivered over 100 sandwiches to Crouse! We couldn’t forget about them! We are so happy we could team up with Jean to do this. She raised enough money to do over 400 sandwiches total to our front line workers. How amazing is that?! Thank you again to all our frontline workers. You have been through quite the year and you just kept showing up for our loved ones. That’s a true hero in our eyes. THANK YOU! WE’RE OPEN FOR INSIDE DINING AND BAR SEATING! WE’RE HERE TO BRING THE CRAIC BACK (again) Can you even believe it?! After 50+ days in the Orange Zone, we have made it out alive. Lot’s of fighting was done to achieve this. ... Just like we mentioned in our last post, we are still in a Yellow Zone, which means we are restricted to FOUR people MAX at a table. You also must have a mask on at all times while in the restaurant except when you are seated. Remember these are guidelines the state has set for us and we please ask that you follow them so we don’t end up going backwards! We will also be cleaning and sanitizing everything!
