"Within the Ebony Library of our historic home, Glenview, amongst the shelves beneath the portrait of Mr. John Bond Trevor, lies a selection of items well known to Victorians. Jewelry made of jet stone, accessories accented with human hair, photographs of beloved family members after they have died, and other trinkets of mourning were hugely popular in the Victorian era (18371901). During a time when infant mortality was high and doctors were unable to prevent the spread of ...disease, the act of mourning became a frequent and public affairone that also spread to Glenview." -Victoria McKenna-Ratjen, Curatorial Assistant Join us today at 1:30pm to learn about the practices and traditions of mourning during the Victorian era through the story of the Trevor family. Registration is required for this event at: https://hudsonriver.secure.force.com/ticket/ Or watch it live here on Facebook.

From his studio on the Bowery in Manhattan, Joseph DiGiorgio celebrated nature. In this painting from the HRM’s permanent collection, "Untitled Landscape," DiGiorgio helps us see like an artist, immersed completely in the wooded landscape. This work is enhanced by bands of abstract brushstrokes in radiant fall colors overlaid by a veil of pointillist dots and a strong vertical rhythm of tree trunks. This work is featured in our Google Arts & Culture exhibition, "Walks With A...rtists: The Hudson Valley and Beyond." "It's hard to pick just one of the 360 scenes in 'Light Atlas,' but I often find myself drawn to this one over and over again. The barn and silos remind me of my home state of Vermont, and something about how Daignault has rendered the raindrops on the car window (or maybe the camera lens!) makes the work both like a snapshot and abstract. I love how she incorporates weather elements in these works and thinking about how something familiar can look different from hour to hour... and across the seasons." Bridget McCormick, HRM's Manager of School Programs, is starting off our contest inspired by the 360 paintings from around the United States that compose "Light Atlas." The immersive work,by Cynthia Daignault is currently on view at the HRM in "Landscape Art & Virtual Travel." We invite you to experience "Light Atlas" for yourself and pick your favorite of the 360 paintings and explain why the painting resonates with you. Share it on Instagram and tag the @hudsonrivermuseum and use the hashtags #HRMVirtualTravel and #360detail. Or email your photo to [email protected]. We’ll share the submissions, then pick a winner who will receive a catalog of Light Atlas. If we wish to become great in any one thing we must condense our powers to one point. Artist Lilly Martin Spencer quoted in a letter to her mother, Angelique Martin, October, 1850. In the nineteenth century, still life was one of the only subjects considered appropriate for women artists. Our exhibition, Women to the Fore, which features the work of more the 40 female-identifying artists over a span of 150 years, begins with the work of artists such as Lilly Martin Spenc...er, who expanded the boundaries of still life to become eyewitnesses of nature, urban environs, and cycles of life. Come see the evolution of art and expression in the exhibition for yourself. We’re open Thursdays-Sundays from 12-5pm. Advance reservations are recommended, but walk-ins we welcome. Purchase your tickets at: http://ow.ly/199U50C162R #WomenToTheFore #LillyMartinSpencer Image: Lilly Martin Spencer (American, b. England, 18221902). Peach, Lily, and Rose, 1866. Oil on board. Now you can cast your ballot in style with an I Voted sticker designed by Derrick Adams! The Brooklyn-based artist, whose exhibition, "We Came to Party and Plan," closed last weekend at HRM, is one of 48 artists, including Amy Sherald, Hank Willis Thomas, Shepard Fairey, Lorna Simpson, who were selected by New York Magazine to design the stickers. The magazine will feature the reimagined I Voted stickers on four different covers, and also distribute 500,000 free. The sti...ckers are also available for pre-order. Adams chose to highlight American civil rights leader Bayard Rustin on his sticker: Rustin fought tirelessly for equality throughout his life and was the main organizer for Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Montgomery Bus Boycotts and the March on Washington. I’m calling for us to emulate his energy to continue the fight for justice and equality. Make sure you get out and vote! Artist Robert Rauschenberg was born #OTD in 1925 and died in 2008. Celebrate Rauschenberg’s legacy in this Art Project, Chow Time: Exploring the Work of Robert Rauschenberg. Recommended for ages 5+.
