REOPENING MID JULY Unlike many, we remained open throughout quarantine. We continued to provide meals to our community and surrounding areas. But now as many reopen, we need a break! Humphreys will be closed for the next two weeks - we’ll see you mid- July!

Update It’s a Good News, Bad News thing... Good News: the Otsego Country Development Corporation has acknowledged that Humphrey’s did, indeed, submit our application for a grant on time and in order, and has presented us with a recovery check. ... Our sincere thanks go out to Judy Pangman and Mark Drnek for their efforts to solve the mystery of the missing missive. Bad News: We just learned that Roni‘s foot is not healing as it should and she is scheduled for additional surgery at the end of the month. Any hope we had of reopening quickly has been crushed. Anyone who knows Roni knows how much she wants to get back in the kitchen at Humphrey’s. We will keep you all posted as things develop. Thanks for your ongoing understanding and support.

Humphrey’s Update We had fervently hoped to be back in business by now providing everyone with Chef Roni‘s Home Cooking on Steroids. But... even tho’ her foot surgery was successful, the healing process is clearly taking much longer than anticipated. ... Thanks go out to all our friends who are inquiring about her status. Hopefully by the end of the month she will be back to sautéing her way around the kitchen. More to come....

Regarding our previous post.... Chef Roni and I want to thank all of you for your support. It is clear that the concept of Community comes from those around us and not city, state or federal governments. Our generation never wanted to rely upon government hand outs of any kind and our application for a reopening grant was made with mixed emotions. ... We have contacted Judy Pangman for clarification and she said that she has no record of our application. Judy is a good person and we accept her word for this. Perhaps ours was really the first company to submit on line and it disappeared into the Internet Twilight Zone. To say we weren’t disappointed when we read the list of awardees would be a lie but the fact is that we built our little bistro without a penny of subsidies or grants and we will continue do what we love to do going forward without them. You see, Humphrey’s has always been a labor of love and will continue to be so as long as our health permits us to operate. Things may never be the same again for a long time but Humphrey’s will adapt and we will reopen again in phases determined by government restrictions and common sense. See you all soon.

Please allow me to vent. Community. Humphrey’s has been proud to be a part of the Oneonta community for eight years. Since 2012 we have participated in and contributed to many charity events and done our best to try and provide an upscale menu for those who desire something better than corporate food chain meals. When the pandemic struck in February we not only remained open when most other eateries closed, we prepared and delivered discounted meals to families who wer...e sheltering in place. When grants were offered we applied but never heard a word from anyone. The city took care of its downtown restaurants with Saturday street closings, tables and tents. We honestly didn’t expect them to offer us any assistance. Most recently, we applied for the City of Oneonta reopening grant on the second day that it was available because they said that it would be on a first come first served basis. Right. We have been closed since June so that Chef Roni could have surgery to her foot. Three months with everything shut down. Friday we received a note from the city advising us that our August water usage was substantially higher than previous months. So to the city of Oneonta I just want to say Thanks. For nothing.

Just when you think things might be getting better... We just learned that Chef Roni needs an operation on four of her toes. Recovery will be at least three or four weeks and she probably won’t feel like hopping around in the kitchen on one foot soooo... We appreciate your patience and will do our best to get back on our feet as quickly as possible. ... Keep an eye out for updates on our Facebook page.
