Now at the Virtual Sl Cinema Cafe! Coded Bias is an eye-opening documentary analyzing the social consequences of data tracking , AI and surveillance systems being both developed and controlled by powerful interests. "The ramifications to credit scores, loan assessments, health care access, mortgage refinancing requests, welfare administration and job applications are eye-opening, particularly when zip codes, ethnicity, family income and police records factor into those processes, thereby perpetuating historic inequalities. Coded Bias argues persuasively that Big Data remains blindfolded about the discrimination embedded in our technology. Looking for a thriller to check out next movie night? Try His House on Netflix. It has 100% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes! "One of the best debuts of the year, Remi Weekes’ shrewd, tender, and sometimes terrifying His House begins with a clever premise the immigrant experience as a horror movie and expands on that idea in knowing and unexpected ways. Whereas a lesser film might have condescended to these characters and mined easy scares from the indignities of the as...similation process, Weekes’ dingy chiller implicitly recognizes that life would be difficult for a grieving Black couple who show up in England with nothing but each other and a few trinkets to their names, and it never stops using its genre as a torch to illuminate the specific forms those shadowed difficulties might take." - David Ehrilch, The Guardian http://ow.ly/3a7f50DkluO #hishouse #movienight #netflix #whattowatch #horror #thriller #tv #nowstreaming #watchnow

Today's artist spotlight is Tkay Maidza! This singer-songwriter and rapper has released multiple mixtapes in recent years, as well as catchy, genre-bending tracks like "24k" and "Shook." "Maidza was born in Zimbabwe in 1996 and moved to Australia when she was 5 years old. Her metallurgist father and chemist mother settled in Perth before moving east to Adelaide, where Maidza was raised around musicians. Her uncle is the prominent Zimbabwean singer-songwriter Andy Brown, and h...er father was also a guitarist on the side. 'My family were very loud in the sense that everyone’s always singing, everyone’s always dancing, which is a cultural thing as well,' she says, describing warm memories of gatherings where her dad would play alongside other local musicians. Maidza also owes her music career in part to him: As a high schooler, she found the recording software FL Studio on his computer and started recording her own songs." - Eric Torres, Pitchfork http://ow.ly/r4Jy50DklmW

Happy Birthday to Alice Walker - poet, social activist, and winner of the Pulitzer Prize for The Color Purple! Truly the suffering is great, here on earth. We blunder along, shredded by our mistakes, bludgeoned by our faults. Not having a clue where the dark path leads us. But on the whole, we stumble along bravely. #alicewalker #thecolorpurple #pulitzer #happybirthday

Our short film recommendation for the day is "Alone" by director Garret Bradley. Watch now at the New York Times' Vimeo channel! "Sundance may be over, but Garrett Bradley’s short film Alone still feels as relevant as ever. The film was awarded the Short Form Jury Award in nonfiction after being one of 68 shorts accepted into the festival earlier this year. By telling the story of Aloné Watts, whose boyfriend Desmond has been incarcerated in a private prison for a year, Bra...dley examines the question of what it would mean to marry someone behind bars." - Allison Picurro, Indiewire http://ow.ly/6TOm50DklpU #shortfilm #sundance #juryaward #nyt #blackcinema #blackartists #blackculture

A Virtual Sl Cinema Cafe Exclusive! THE CHANGIN' TIMES OF IKE WHITE, Directed by Daniel Vernon (78 minutes, UK.) Go to solcinemacafe.com to stream. About: Serving a life sentence for murder in the early 1970s, music prodigy Ike White had plenty of time to perfect his musical talent, but no hope of putting it to use in the outside world. From this notoriety, he was able to record an album inside the prison with big-time producer Jerry Goldstein (War, Sly and the Family Stone)..., while superstar Stevie Wonder lobbied successfully for Ike's early release from prison. With an acclaimed album under his belt and the support of Wonder and others in the industry, Ike was poised for stardom. But, instead, he went off the grid for over 40 years. Daniel Vernon's mesmerizing new documentary is unpredictable and moving, echoing the strange journey of Ike White. #movienight #virtualcinema #nowstreaming #ikewhite #danielvernon #watchnow #solcinema #whattowatch #nowshowing #movies #cinephile #cinema #filmstowatch
