The wording of the DOE sexual health requirement is intentionally vague, as was noted when it was first introduced a few years ago. Although the DOE recommends Health Smart and Reducing the Risk, neither is required. Since it is so open to interpretation a school could spend a class period on the benefits of abstinence and satisfy the requirement. It's important that we know what we're working with if we're going to try to improve it.

NYC does NOT have comprehensive sex ed in grades K-12 as recommended by national standards. It’s time to take #SexEdAction to NYC! Knowledge is power. Let’s arm our youth with knowledge so they can make informed & healthier decisions about their relationships.
