This week's #IrishWordoftheWeek from the Irish Arts Centeris "Speirbhean!" Speirbhean (pronounced spare-van) translates literally as sky woman, or woman of the heavens. The best-known genre of poetry in the Irish language is the aisling: a vision within a dream, in which the narrator falls asleep and a beautiful woman appears to them. One example of an aisling is Ceo Draiochta (The Magic Mist): its speirbhean is described as siorshileadh (ever-weeping) and r...ighinrosc (languid-eyed), with hair that is bui-chasta (literally yellow-twisting: long, blonde curls tied in a fabulously stylish way). She laments the predicament in which Ireland finds itselfthe aisling was most popular in the aftermath of Cromwell’s invasionand the conclusion of the poem is a plea for, or a prediction of, a significant change in regime. * #IrishWordoftheWeek is curated by Darach O Seaghdha of Motherfoclóir / The Irish For. For those who missed our Tuesday virtual Halloween event with the Embassy of Ireland in Canada, watch it back here and on YouTube at https://youtu.be/Lb8vCcPL544! Did you know that Ireland has celebrated Halloween for over 1,000 years? Do you know why we carve pumpkins or wear masks? Do you know to be careful not to be drawn into the Otherworld on Halloween Night? With this year's celebrations a little different from what we are used to, tune in as we take you on a journey of discovery through time and traditions, tracing the story of Halloween back and forth across the Atlantic from ancient Celtic traditions to modern celebrations.

This week's #IrishWordoftheWeek from the Irish Arts Center is "Tóraíocht." "Tóraíocht Diarmuid agus Gráinne" is a tale of two runaways: Gráinne is engaged to the much older Fionn MacCool; Diarmuid is Fionn's young lieutenant for whom Gráinne falls. The lovers flee, and Fionna hero in other Irish myths but the villain herechases them. "Tóraíocht" means "pursuit." Lady Gregory, whose love life at one point mirrored Diarmuid and Gráinne's to an extent (minus a tóraíocht around... the island), turned the story into a play in the early 20th century, helping it become one of Ireland’s best-loved legends.
