While doing a considerable amount of research on the virus and the global impact, I can say that I do not have any known cases of coronavirus at Island Acupuncture and Wellness, however I have chosen to temporarily close our operations effective today, March 16th and indefinitely until I understand more in order to keep our community and city safe. Please keep in mind suggestions that I have previously given you. Much of it will help you during this time. Thank you all, this is a trying time for all of us but we will get through this together! Ginger is immune-boosting pungent food (with Lung affinity) frequently found in our kitchens. In Chinese medicine, drinking bowl of hot ginger soup then going to bed (under warm covers) promotes sweating. ... There are plenty of medicinal food recipes with ginger, which can be used according to specific cold symptoms. One of the frequently used recipes to help prevent colds is a rice porridge (congee) combination of 5 green onions + 3 slices of ginger + sticky rice (3.5oz). If you do not have ginger at home, Roosevelt Island's Wholesome Factory store still has it for sale. Tomorrow is Farmers Market Day, and you can find ginger + green onions there as well. Abstract: Takahashi, Takashi & Sumino, Hiroyuki & Kanda, Tsugiyasu & Yamaguchi, Nobuo. (2009). Acupuncture Modifies Immune Cells. Journal of Experimental & Clinical Medicine. 1. 17-22. 10.1016/S1878-3317(09)60006-1. Acupuncture, a relief procedure originating in East Asia, has become increasingly popular as a therapy for pain and chronic diseases that are difficult to manage with conventional treatments. The attributive effects of acupuncture have been investigated in various inflammatory disorders including asthma, allergic rhinitis, inflammatory bowel disease, rheumatoid arthritis, epicondylitis, complex regional pain syndrome type 1, and vasculitis. Japan is one of the countries that has done extensive research on the various effects of acupuncture on immunological functions. Recently, we studied acupuncture's effect on leukocyte and lymphocyte subpopulations in human peripheral blood. Based on research data and other findings previously published in the literature, this article reviews the ascribed immunomodulation of acupuncture on the immune system, which includes activities of macrophages, neutrophils, natural killer cells, and lymphocytes, immunoglobulin production, and complement systems.

Meet Huang Qi! Astragalus [Huang Qi] is an herb that has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. Some of you have learned about it in my immunity boosting soup post: there are numerous health benefits, with anti-aging and anti-inflammatory effects.... Astragalus is believed to prolong life and used to treat a wide variety of ailments, such as fatigue, shortness of breath and the common cold. It’s also used against heart disease, diabetes and other conditions. It is best to consult with your practitioner if you want to add astragalus to your regimen, as there are certain conditions where caution needs to be applied ( this herb is not advised during 3rd trimester of pregnancy, not for those who suffer from allergies, and there is an additional list of conditions we can go over). #islandacuwellness #rooseveltisland #astragalus #chinesemedicineworks

Beauty Tips: Start the day with a cup or two of warm or room temperature water (and add a bit of lemon to it). ... Drink room temperature water throughout the day, small sips work best. Avoid drinking too much water at once this causes stress to kidney system and disruption of digestion. Calculate how much you should be drinking (approximately) by dividing your body weight (lbs) in half, and drinking that many ounces per day. Regular hydration is important for our skin elasticity and natural hair color. Pay attention to your hydration habits if you are experiencing arthritic conditions of the lower back or knees dehydration might translate into joint issues. These are just a few reasons why water is important. Books can be (and have been!) written about this. Investigate acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping, herbal remedies - if you want/need help with your Kidney energy. I am happy help (click on link in bio to read more about above listed modalities)! #islandacuwellness #rooseveltisland #waterislife #healyourbody

Water is everything. When we are born, we are (roughly) 75% water by weight. Adult men are approximately 60% water, and adult women around 50%. ... Think about this for a moment what does that difference mean as we age? Water is also part of the Five Element Theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is an element of the winter season, and its association is with the Kidney Organ/Bladder System (a concept which covers more than just physical kidney/bladder organs - a topic for another time). Stay tuned for a few interesting facts about water (next post)! See more

Did you know January is #soupmonth ? The best way to deal with the winter months, is to build up your immunity. Here is a Traditional Chicken Soup Recipe from an amazing professor, Dr. Jeremy Pulsifer, at Pacific College of Health and Science, where I received my Acupuncture degree. He would share this recipe every semester in most classes, because he knew how important is to have strong Qi and blood. ... Since we are in the middle of the colder season and this is soup month, I thought that it would be a great idea to share. Herbs have been traditionally used in cooking for both their healing properties and for flavor enhancement. This particular soup will boost the immune system, support the lungs, and nourishes your blood and Qi, your "energy force". In addition, the chicken and herbs are tonifying/strengthening, which assist in preventing common seasonal illnesses, such as colds, the flu, and so much more. Ingredients: 1 Whole chicken, preferably organic 1 Packet of soup herbs (Astragalus Huang Qi, Ginseng Dang Shen, Reishi Mushroom Ling Zhi, Chinese Yam Shan Yao, Pear, Longan Fruit Long Yan Rou, Goji Berries Gou Qi Zi, & Honey fried Licorice Zhi Gan Cao) Vegetables, your choice Directions: After rinsing the chicken, place it in a large pot with the Chinese herbs. Fill the pot with cold water, allowing for two inches of water above the top of the chicken. Bring the water to a boil. Then put a lid on the pot, turn down the heat to allow a slow simmer, and continue cooking for about an hour. When the chicken is done, remove it from the broth and let it cool. Add your favorite vegetables to the pot and continue cooking until the vegetables are done. Note: Debone the chicken and return it to the soup. Be sure to remove the herbs that looks like a tongue depressor as it has a woody texture and is not pleasant to eat. Dosage: Enjoy one bowl of soup daily for one person. Increase the ingredients per person This recipe is traditionally made as a chicken soup, but it is still very nourishing and effective if the chicken is removed and the vegetables and herbs are only eaten.
