People are at the very center of all of our work- we often talk about the people we support with programs and services, the folks we connect with out in the community. But what about the folks that make our work possible? The folks who are with us for the last mile food deliveries, placing food boxes in trunks and backseats at community food distributions, packing and sorting donated food in our warehouse, helping tend to our farm, keeping our admin systems humming? Volunteer...s make our work possible- their impact is felt all across Long Island, in every community we serve as a team. April is #VolunteerAppreciationMonth and we are honored to spend some time this month sharing some stories from volunteers about their experiences with us. Today we take time to give thanks to all who have served in our armed services. We honor those who have dedicated themselves to the defense of our nation and our freedoms. The Long Island region has the 2nd largest Veteran population in the United States, and Suffolk County has the largest Veteran population in New York State. To help the many who are struggling and in need of food assistance, Island Harvest launched Operation: HOPE a program specifically designed to assist... veterans and the families of active duty personnel deployed overseas. Run by Veteran staff and volunteers in coordination with local veterans organizations, Operation: HOPE delivers food and supplies to the doors of Long Island veterans and their families 2 days a week. In addition, Operation: HOPE volunteers and staff provide information and referrals to link veterans and military families with benefits and services that can help them. Our work to support them is especially crucial this year, as our Operation: HOPE home deliveries during COVID have increased 1048% over the same time period last year. With your sustained support, we can continue to serve Veteran's and their families all across Long Island.

This year, Island Harvest's renowned Taste of the Harvest Event becomes a virtual gala, highlighting the culinary talents of 3 prominent Long Island chefs: Chef David Burke Chef Claudia Fleming and Chef Guy Reuge. Participants will have the opportunity to prepare a 3-course dinner "alongside" the chefs through virtual demonstrations of an appetizer, entrée and dessert. Food for preparing the meal will be delivered to each participant by Our Harvest.Each gourmet gala box includes prep food for an appetizer, dinner, and dessert for two people, recipe cards, and a commemorative gift. This year's event will honor @lessingshospitality and Loretta Sehlmeyer, Volunteer Extraordinaire!
