Happy #WorldCarFreeDay! These are photographs of streets on Car-Free Sundays from across the country. Why can’t these be our streets everyday? Every year, World Car-Free Day is celebrated on 22 September to encourage motorists and commuters to imagine their localities with car-free for a day. With an aim to prioritise non-motorized transport, it highlights the virtues of going car-free to citizens, which include reduced air pollution and higher use of cycling and walking. Acc...ording to the World Car-Free Network, the World Car-Free Day can be a showcase for what our cities might look like, feel like, and sound like without cars 365 days a year. In the spirit of World Car Free Day, over 100 cities across the country are transforming themselves to prioritise walking and cycling through the India Cycles4Change Challenge and the Streets for People Challenge. The Smart Cities Mission, MoHUA launched the two Challenges to emphasize the need for reimagining and redesigning cities for people, and not just cars. Through the Challenges, India is taking the first steps towards creating streets for walking and cycling, truly streets for people.
