With the rise of the merchant class during the Edo period, the adoption of architectural styles such as screens and sliding doors became affordable. GHOST OF YOTSUYA (1959, Nakagawa) | Originally for kabuki, this ghost story has been adapted for film 30+ times including by Kinoshita and Fukasaku. Prior to filming, crews pay respect at the gravesite of the tale’s ghost to avoid misfortune rumored to haunt them if they do not.
