Happy 80th birthday to our Social Justice Activist-In-Residence, Ruth Messinger: tireless activist, generous teacher, and New York City icon. Ruth's career in public service and activism has been long and illustrious. Elected to her local school board in 1975, she served on the New York City Council from 1978 through 1989, was elected Manhattan Borough president in 1989, and became president of American Jewish World Service - AJWS in 1998 (where she is currently Global Ambass...ador). Today, in addition to her work as the Finkelstein Institute Social Justice Fellow at The Jewish Theological Seminary - JTS, she is a mentor and guide to so many of us--and we are better for having learned from her. With much around us to fret about, Ruth's words, "Despair is not a strategy," are a rallying cry. May they be the spark we need to make the world a better place. See more

While we may be unable to gather in person, we can lift our spirits together as we enter our much needed day of rest. Following services, we'll host an afterparty featuring a performance by Broadway's Ben Fankhauser (Newsies, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical). More info: bit.ly/32emtjJ

When opportunities to travel locally closed up this year for participants in the JCC’s Connections group, they didn’t let it slow them down. Instead, they embarked on a global adventure. Realizing that the limitations on in-person travel did not apply online, Connections’ director, Hannah Badain, and its coordinator, Lori Rosenfeld, came up with a way for the group to tour the world, virtually, and since June, the group has explored a different destination every week. To date, they've traveled to Italy, Paris, Greece, South Africa, Amsterdam, Israel, Japan, Argentina, London, Australia, and much more. Read more about the incredible virtual world tour our Connections group has gone on throughout the past few months here: mmjccm.org/node/47681

Today the JCC is proud to welcome its new Chief Program Officer, Megan Whitman! Megan's face will be familiar to anyone who's experienced the JCC's top-notch Arts + Ideas programming in the last 10 years, as she headed our Lambert Center for Arts + Ideas. Under her leadership, the Center developed the Conversations program, welcoming guests like Chelsea Clinton, Roxane Gay, and Malcolm Gladwell, and curated high-level exhibitions in our Laurie M. Tisch Gallery. We're so excited to have Megan on board, and she looks forward to meeting all of you, virtually, or safely in person!

While we will miss cheering on Team JCC during what would have been the 50th TCS New York City Marathon, we look forward to watching our runners take to the streets in 2021. In the meantime, here are some throwbacks from last year's race!
