Kahuna Koatings would like to give a special shout out to this wonderful woman who has done more than anyone will ever really know for the Buffalo area. Peg Overdorf has been a fixture in the Valley and First Ward neighborhoods all her life. For the past 30 plus years as director of the community association, she’s ushered in HUGE changes in downtown Buffalo. When I was a kid she made sure the poor and working families of the neighborhood had an active and healthy communi...ty life. She worked tirelessly to find sponsors so we could play sports, have access to arts and activities, dance parties, roller skating trips, summer camps, movie nights, the Ralley in the Valley carnival (which became Buffalo River Fest) and so much more. She made a way for us in a neighborhood where most folks were scratching to get by and dreaming of getting out. There was a time when I was young that you couldn’t give away a house In the Old First Ward or Valley. We stood in line to go to the food banks she would set up for us. Now folks are fighting for those houses and dining at multi million dollar restaurants like Buffalo Riverworks. It’s one of the hippest places in Buffalo. The apartments on the river are $2500 a month in a neighborhood where just a few years ago you’d be lucky to get $500 a month from a tenant. The environmental clean up alone is worth its weight in gold. Where old derelict buildings stood, beautiful parks and events centers now welcome you. Once broken streets and homes are now clean and inviting. There are kayak launches and boat houses where broken industrial pilings once stood. Hundreds of people a day paddling down the river. Tours. History walks. Boat operators. Peg had influence on all of it. Whether direct or indirect. It’s absolutely incredible. She still operates the Valley Center as well, which hosts a large senior center, childcare center, and still the sports fields and basketball courts for the neighborhood youth. She has the biggest heart. The strongest will and works harder than anyone I know in service of others. She’s humble too so she’ll hate that I wrote this.... but people should know! If you grew up in the neighborhood she will introduce you as one of her kids. I hope when she retires someday the city erects a statue in her honor. If they don’t. I will. I’m proud of you Peg Overdorf and all that you’ve done and continue to do. You have made Buffalo the best city in the USA and one of the best in the world. Oh... thanks for hiring us to re stain the bandstand and pergolas. Almost forgot!!! Hahah.

Sometimes a smile is the only currency we need. This young lady was attacked two weeks ago, unprovoked, while her assailants filmed it. Folks have lined up to ...brighten her spirits! Thanks to Ed Barton of Barton and Sons Construction for getting me involved in the free remodel of her bedroom and art studio. She’s a beautiful and talented girl with a sweet sweet family. The community outpouring is well deserved! Tonight I sprayed her ceilings black. It’s gonna look soooo cool. You rock Amelia!!! Thanks for being an inspiration!!! Kahuna loves ya!

This Downtown Mansion got Kahunified on it’s 3rd floor. A totally different vision than most of the homes we’ve painted in the neighborhood but we LOVE it and so do they!!!
