Keuka College Occupational Therapy 12.12.2020

A very small sample but look at the incredible work our senior OT students did with shadow boxes projects this year! According to Dr. Kristen Bacon, "This year was certainly different in many ways. Due to obvious reasons, our interviews with Clinton Crest were completed remotely. Clinton Crest, mainly Kendra, the activities director, spent many hours helping us to conduct these interviews via zoom. It was an interesting experience to say the least. Our students, to no surprise, rocked the remote challenge and did a great job overcoming some obstacles like hearing loss, technology with the older generation, etc." I wish we could share all of the photos because everyone did a fantastic job!! Just another reason Keuka College and the Division of Allied Health & Wellness are so unique!!

Do you know what makes our OT program unique? Our HONORS PROGRAM!! Since our division hopes to develop students into innovative, independent thinking, evidence-based practitioners who effectively promote best practice within client-centered environments through the use of technology and the therapeutic application of occupation to enhance quality of life. Part of this preparation is the development of skills in life-long learning which reinforces... the profession’s requirements for continuing education beyond entry level certification. The Occupational Therapy program recognizes that life-long learning can be achieved in many ways from volunteering to specialized education. Therefore, our HONORS PROGRAM is designed to recognize individuals and their individual style of enhancing their professional skills. Some great relationships have developed with the following organizations: Rainbow Junction: daycare Penn Yan school district St. Marks Terrace Clinton crest manor The homestead: nursing home Adult day social program Yates county public health: fall prevention Mozaic: bowling Penn Yan Manor coffee hour Autism Corner What honors opportunity have you participated in? What makes Keuka College Occupational Therapy Division Unique? We have a new living learning community (LLC) this year. What is an LLC? "At Keuka College, Living Learning Communities options allow you to live with and take classes with other first-year students who share your personal interests, passions or intended academic major." The LLC we developed this year is called, Wellness P.A.C.K. (Personal Advancement and Rural Community Health Knowledge). This LLC is desi...gned for first-year students majoring in Occupational Therapy, Nursing, Social Work and Community Health & Wellness to develop a holistic lifestyle that balances physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. This community is one in which incoming Freshman students will be given the opportunity to live with one another while learning about wellness topics including, but not limited to, nutrition, meditation, mental health and stress reduction, sexuality, relationships, and other wellness topics related to rural health and wellness. Our first topic this semester was, Intellectual Wellness. Reach out to us and we are happy to share more information! Keuka College Cassie Ryder Michele Bennett Carrie Roberts

Thanks to all those who drove near and far to take advantage of the PTE clothing sale pick up; it was great to see everyone and was very successful. We started with 7 boxes and ended with 2 boxes to distribute in the fall. We hope you all enjoy your items and we thank you again for your continued support of the PTE fundraiser. For those of you who signed up for out of state shipping, we are working to get those price quotes for you today and we will be in touch via email with further details. Thanks and have a wonderful day!

Good afternoon! First off, on behalf of the PTE Honor Society of Keuka College, I'd like to say thank you for your support. This was a very successful fundraiser and we all greatly appreciate your support. Unfortunately, due to the COVID pandemic, we have had to delay our disbursement of these items to those who purchased. Now that we have begun Phase 2 of reopening the state, we would like to offer an option to you for pick-up of your items. You may choose from the following... options: Option 1: Pick up on the following dates and times from Dr. Kristen Bacon at 3494 County Road 28, Watkins Glen. In order to comply with the current CDC and Gov. Cuomo recommendations, a socially distancing pickup site in Watkins Glen will be provided to those choosing to take advantage. For this pick-up, we request that you will remain in your vehicle, provide us with your name and we'll hand the items to you. All items are separated and labeled with your name. Facial masks will be required during this event. In order to prevent congestion at the pickup site, we also request that you don't pull into the driveway, rather just pull off into the grass by the table setup. Here is the pick-up days and times: Friday, June 5th from 1-4pm Saturday, June 6th from 5-7pm If you'd like someone else to pick up your order, I must receive an email in advance indicating it is ok to pick up for someone else. Please email me at [email protected] prior to your arrival. There will be no alternate pick up times (until the Fall which will occur on campus). Option 2: Wait until our return to Keuka College in the Fall for a TBA pickup date and time on campus. Option 3: If you are OUT OF STATE and would like to schedule a pre-pay mail option, please email me at [email protected] and we would be happy to set something up. We would be accepting Venmo for this transaction, but reimbursement must be received before shipping will occur. We are sorry, but this option is only available for those who live out of state. Again, we appreciate your patience with us as we work to distribute items as safely and quickly as possible. Thanks again and hope to see you all again soon! Good afternoon! We all hope everyone is safe and healthy during these trying times. We are working on securing some fieldwork experiences in developmental settings. If there any alumni or OT friends who would be willing to supervise students for a shortened 2-3 weeks in the Buffalo area, please let us know! We are also looking for a shortened 2-3 weeks in the southern tier of New York please contact [email protected]. These have to be face to face (not telehealth) experiences. Thank you so much!

For those of you who ordered PTE apparel, we are working diligently to come up with a couple options for dispersing your orders. As previously mentioned, the original plan was to have a pick up day on campus, but since COVID-19 had other plans for our spring semester, we ask for your patience while we decide how to move forward with safely getting your items to you, while still maintaining social distance guidelines. Please stay tuned. Thanks again for your patience, we do appreciate it. If you still have questions, please direct them to [email protected]. Thank you!!

Our OT Alumni of the Month!!! Jake Ashby!! Year graduated: 2002 Favorite Keuka OT memory: The struggle and reward of stressful times/weeks, there are too many to single out. We had a great class and remarkable professors- Peter, Chris, Jean, and Shirley. Even though our class was very different the camaraderie was uniting. We suffered and succeeded together.... What they are doing now: Owner of my own community-based OT practice and NYS Assemblyman representing the 107th District. What is the most rewarding aspect of being an occupational therapist? Helping people find meaning. As a younger clinician I sometimes overlooked how valuable this can be, and it is by far the best part of the profession. Thank you for everything you do Jake!!!
