It's been a crazy year everyone! #savecollegetown #ithaca #cornell "ITHACA, N.Y.-- As locally owned businesses continue to struggle due to the pandemic a couple of Cornell graduates started #SaveCollegetown is a campaign to save locally owned businesses in Ithaca’s Collegetown. ... This campaign has already raised around $40,000 and been able to help a handful of locally owned businesses stay open during the pandemic. Helena Wu graduated from Cornell University in 2016 and when she was a student at the university, she spent a lot of time at local restaurants, restaurants where she developed long-term relationships. I was born and raised in Brazil and Ithaca was pretty much my first home in America, said Wu. It means a lot because these business owners are special and they care about us. After recently visiting her home away from home, Wu noticed the struggling businesses and felt obligated to help in some way. When I came back to New York City where I am currently based, me and a friend of mine we talked about this and said hey so many places we used to go are shutting down and we found out through social media that Cafe Pacific was actually considering closing, said Wu. We were really upset by that and we felt really hopeless but then we decided to start a Gofundme and we partnered with other people who have created other Gofundme and one thing led to another and we raised in total close to 40,000 dollars. Alina Kim owner of K-House Karaoke has been closed since early spring due to the pandemic and is another business that #SaveCollegetown has been helping through fundraising, which Kim says has been amazing. It looks like legislation is pending to help out industries that were hardest hit and if they are not around there won't be anything to save so part of what Helena is doing is allowing us to stay in this limbo while we await legislation, said Kim. Since the pandemic started Kim said she has been receiving so much love and well wishes from community members in the form of cards, phone calls, and financial support and she are very thankful for that. I know for personal reasons that I love karaoke for very specific reasons but I had no idea that so many people really thought of it as therapy and such a special place to celebrate, said Kim. Save Collegetown is a campaign that is not only providing local businesses with financial support but is also financial, legal and emotional support. Kim said she misses all of her K-House Fam and she can not wait to get back on stage to sing with them in the near future. I really just miss singing with people, there is a special bond that happens when you sing with people and it is kind of similar to working out with someone, having a workout buddy, or going for a walk with someone, it is very similar to that in that it is a special type of connection and comradery, said Kim.
