Terpin makes wine from the land that's for the land with the least amount of intervention possible, and Quinto Quarto is an excellent example of this. The namesake 'Quinto Quarto' translates to "the fifth quarter" in Italian, referring to offal meat or scraps. The grapes come from the younger vines in his vineyard, which are still at least 30 years o...ld, and are meant to be drunk young but have the potential of aging for some time as well. Each wine in this series (of 4 with the same label, only distinguishable by the border of the label and the name noted on the back of the label) go through spontaneous fermentation from indigenous yeasts. This vinification method is ideal given his location, nestled in the hillsides of Collio on the Slovenian border of Friuli-Venezia Giulia in the northeast of Italy. Christian Tschida’s ‘Birdscape’ is an awesome representation of the line currently being blurred between light reds and deep rosés, especially by the more forward thinking/progressive/modern wine makers. He perfects this balancing act through a process he calls Pink Maceration which makes Birdscape as complex as it is refreshing. The blend, made up of mainly Blaufankisch & Pinot Noir, comes together as hyper-ripe strawberry, lingonberry, and freshly picked herbs wrapped by ...fluid & electric minerality... and is def one of the most coveted by our staff here at Kichin.
