3 incidents, EMS, wires down, and capped off by a reported structure fire on Rabbit Run, lakeside views, running south off Atwater Road made a busy day for King Ferry Firefighters. The reported structure Fire was toned out at 1:47 pm. King Ferry Fire responded along with Genoa Fire Automatic Aid and Aurora Fire, Mutual Aid. King Ferry FD Assistant Chief Kevin Clemons commanded the operation. Chief Clemons arrived to find the structure was not yet involved in fire, yet seriou...sly at risk from the brush fire climbing up the steep bank from Atwater Road South. Clemons ordered the first arriving unit, King Ferry Tanker/Pumper 1, FF Bill Marsh, Chauffeur, to respond to the Rabbit Run address, attack the fire from above, protect the house from catching fire. KFFD Engine 1, Guy Van Benschoten, chauffeur, was ordered to respond down Atwater Road to Atwater South, extinguish the steep side hill brush fire. Engine 1 positioned to the south, to outflank the fire, using its deck gun (engine mounted pre-piped large nozzle to wet down the south flank and extinguish the brush fire on the bank. Genoa Engine 1 followed King Ferry Engine 1, setting up behind it. Hose lines were stretched to extinguish pockets of fire. A retaining wall, made out of old railroad ties, creosote soaked, had ignited and was especially stubborn to extinguish. The Genoa engine also placed a 6 suction tube into Cayuga Lake for a water supply. Given the low lake level 6 lengths (60 feet) of suction tube was used. Fire damage was to the foliage & dry vegetation on the bank itself , the retaining wall, the stairs leading from lake level to the house, and some outdoor furniture. The cause of the fire is under investigation. There were no injuries. Cayuga County 911, Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office, and Southern Cayuga Instant Aid also assisted in the operation.

FIRE SAFETY TIPS FIR OUR SENIORS AND THEIR FAMILIES Older adults have a 2.6 times greater risk of dying in a fire than the U.S. population as a whole. Your risk of dying in a home fire is greater as you get older.... Discuss your fire escape plan with family and neighbors. Contact your building manager or fire department to discuss your plan if you need extra help escaping. If you use a walker or wheelchair, check all exits to be sure that you can go through the doorways. If you can’t hear your smoke alarm, consider getting one that has a different sound or one that comes with a bed shaker or strobe light. Caregivers should check the smoke alarms of those who are unable to it themselves. Never smoke around medical oxygen. Use a timer to remind you that you are cooking. Your King Ferry Fire Department wants EVERYONE to Stay Safe!

And, now, a Holiday Fire Safety message from the US Fire Administration: The top three days of the year for home candle fires are Christmas, New Year’s Day, and New Year's Eve. Only use decorations that are flame-retardant or not flammable.... Check holiday lights each year for frayed wires or excessive wear. Don’t link more than three strands of holiday lights. Never leave a burning candle unattended. Consider using battery-operated flameless candles. Keep your live Christmas tree away from heat sources and room exits. Water your live Christmas tree daily to keep it from becoming dry.

While en route, the second alarm came in for a motor vehicle accident on Clearview Road at Fire Lane #7.... The Powers Road incident turned out to be a malfunction of the detector. On Clearview Road, responders arrived to find an overturned vehicle. The vehicle was stabilized and the driver was extricated. Photo credit Doug LaFave, Genoa FD
