In redesigning the largest, most successful Braids celebration I had to figure out how. How would I move forward to continue this legacy of Braid #art #design #culture #history and #community? God always gives me what I need when I need it. The 2 words that came to me to guide me through the pandemic is #pivot :(pivot man)- the person in a rank around whom the others wheel and maneuver #flexibility: the ability to be easily modified. International I Love Braids Day 2019 is over! Until next year! What is the big deal-- everything. What makes it special? Everything. July 12, 2019, Governor ...Cuomo signed a bill that stopped and would fine any company from discriminating someone on the basis of their hairstyles such as braids, locks and natural hair-- claiming it is "unprofessional". Forcing people of color--black people, to relax put a wig on their hair to get employment. Which directly impacted our ability to earn money, make a living, pay our bills, and build a future for our families. https://www.governor.ny.gov//governor-cuomo-signs-s6209aa7 For over 26 years I have had the pleasure of knowing these two women beside me-- Debra Hare-Bey and Nilaja Yarborough natural hair care professional. And they were some of the two women that helped me embrace my natural hair and not feel pressured to conform to the masses for the sake of employment when I was working in the financial institutions on Wall Street. (Yes I came from Wall Street) Black Children have been turned away from schools because of their hair. Black celebrities have been made fun of because of their hair. So this movement is not simply a fashion statement it is part of our being. We should be allowed to embrace what God blessed us with without prejudice and discrimination.
