Ptelea trifoliata - Wafer Ash or Hops Tree. This eastern and central US native is great for dry-average soil conditions in full shade to partial shade, making it a great understory tree. Will tolerate full sun with a bit of moisture. Growing 15-20' tall, the flowers are pollinated by carrion flies - the flowers are not a pleasant odor. The seed head that follow look like wafers and were used as a hops substitute. Being in the Rue family, It is also a host plant to Eastern Tiger Swallowtail and Giant Swallowtail butterflies.

I'm so excited to see that some of the Lilium superbum - Turk's-cap Lily are coming up. I thought the squirrels got them all but I have found 4 coming up so far! Yea! Anyone else see theirs yet?

The lovely unfurling fronds of Polystichum acrostichoides - Christmas Fern.

Xanthorhiza simplicissima - Yellowroot. This Eastern US native deciduous shrub blooms in April-May in partial shade to full shade in dry-moist soil growing 6-30" tall. Yellowroot is fantastic for erosion control on slopes. Deer resistant and will tolerate clay soils. Some say the flower is insignificant, but I disagree, it just needs to be viewed up close. Foliage turns a beautiful bronzy yellow in the fall. This is a special order.

Tiarella cordifolia - Foamflower still going strong!

The heavenly scented Phlox divaricata ‘Blue Moon’ aka Woodland Phlox. Flowering now through May in partial shade to full shade in moist, rich soil. Also clay tolerant and deer resistant. 1 gallon @ $27.00 each.

Native Plant of the Week: Name: Polystichum acrostichoides - Christmas Fern Family: Dryopteridaceae ... Bloom Time: Fern, non-flowering Soil Condition: Dry to Moist, Well Drained Light: Partial Shade to Full Shade Size: 12-30 tall with equal spread Native Range: Eastern North America Zone: 3-9 Polystichum acrostichoides is a lovely, clump forming fern for dry and moist shady spots. It received its common name, Christmas Fern, because it stays green right through the holiday season. It was also used by Early Settlers as Christmas decor (let’s bring this tradition back!). It is rabbit and deer resistant. Jugland tolerant so it will grow under black walnut trees. Since it is a clumper it will spread very slowly by rhizomes but will not be aggressive like some other native ferns. If it is very happy with its conditions, it will also spread by spores. Maintenance: You may choose to remove browned and/or damaged fronds in spring for aesthetic reasons, but leave them somewhere for the critters and birds to use for nesting material. Mulch with leaf litter. Benefits: Attracts Ruffed Grouse and Wild Turkey, as they may eat the young shoots in the young fronds in Spring. Uses: Plant in masses on slopes to help combat soil erosion. Tolerates heavy shade. The foliage is great cut and used in flower arrangements. Companion Plants: Great for underplanting shade loving shrubs and trees - Cornus species, Viburnum species, Clethra alnifolia, Cercis canadensis, Fagus grandiflora, Oak species and so much more. Perennial companions include Anemonella thalictroides, Asarum canadense, Aquilegia canadensis, Geranium maculatum, Aster cordifolius, Aster divaricatus and Viola labradorica. Love watching the little birds in the snow. The always adorable black-capped chickadee. Remember they also need access to water this time of year along with supplemental feeding.
