Spring is a great time to mulch around your trees and shrubs. Placing mulch correctly around a tree can help control weeds and keep soil moist. It helps moderate soil temperature, improves overall root and tree health, reduces trunk injury, and soil compaction. Apply mulch three to four inches in depth in a ring evenly around the tree, preferably out to the drip line. Do not place mulch on the base of the trunk. Make sure you purchase quality mulch; rule of thumb is if it ...smells good it is good. Applying too much mulch and having it piled against the trunk can prove catastrophic to the health of the tree. It’s important to understand below the bark is tissue know as the Cambium layer. All the moisture and nutrition that feed the tree travel through this layer, it is important to protect the trunk from injury, but if mulch is piled on the trunk it may also interfere with the plants vascular tissue. Volcano Mulching can encourage poor root growth causing roots to grow upward instead of downward, eventually leading to girdling roots. It can also have the opposite effect and hold to much water which can lead to fungal diseases or bark decay. Avoid Volcano Mulching at all costs. photo credit: patch.com See more
Now is a good time to have your Winter Property Inspection performed. An Arborist will perform a crown inspection which will bring to light any dead, diseased, cracked or poorly attached limbs within your trees. We will then make recommendations based on the information found in the inspection. Much like a checkup, this visual evaluation can help uncover issues before they cause serious damage. These visits are essential to maintaining healthy plant material on your property. Call our office today to set up your complimentary inspection. 631-473-4242
An ounce of prevention, is worth a pound of cure Hurricane season is here! Are you prepared? August and September are the peak months during the hurricane season that lasts from June 1st through November 30th. Trees that are stressed, diseased, hollowed, and have cracked or obvious dead wood can be extremely dangerous during high winds. Not all damage to your home or property is a result of high winds; most damage can also be from falling trees and debris during a storm.... There is no way to prevent storm damage completely on your property. However, having a Certified Arborist perform a property evaluation can educate homeowners on any hazards that may be present. Our Arborists can visit your property now to assess any hazardous situation that may be present. We would like to help you protect your home and family from the damage that can be caused by falling limbs and trees. Prevention is an important part of preparations you can make to protect your home. For more information, contact Koch Tree Services at (631) 473-4242 or email us at, [email protected] See more
