Our outdoor dining in full effect!

Kopitiam 23.12.2021

A reason to celebrate: In April and in partnership with @rethinkfood.nyc we cooked and provided 6000 meals (300 meals a day 5x week) for our neighbors in need of meal assistance and also to NYC Health Gotham/Goveneur! When we first started the program, we thought we would be able to bring on more people from our team to help but given that most are in HS, parents felt more at peace having their kids them stay at home. So it ended up being just the two of us where Kyo would be in the kitchen cooking up the meals then passing them off to Moonlynn to assemble and pack up front. In addition, we were both balancing our regular takeout serviceneedless to say it was a bit anxiety inducing As time went on we were able to bring on 1-2 more people(woohooo!) from our team to help balance, cook up and pack and it’s been so rewarding

We’re so grateful to have the opportunity to partner up with Beyond Meat and restaurants like Kopitiam for the next few weeks through our Restaurant Response Pr...ogram (RRP). Through this partnership with Beyond Meat, we are giving restaurants the opportunity to bring back members of their team to help us create meals for those in need. Our incredible Rethink Food team and restaurant partners like Chef Kyo Pang and Moonlynn Tsai of Malaysian-style cuisine Kopitiam in Manhattan’s Chinatown are turning into relief hubs, providing meals to low-to-no income individuals (with a meal in addition). That’s 200+ daily meals to our neighbors, those in need, and heroes to NYC Health + Hospitals/Gotham Health, Gouverneur and Madison Hamilton House. Check out Chef Pang’s Ramly burger, a delicious street style burger made with a Beyond Meat patty wrapped in a omelette, topped with mayonnaise & ketchup, paired with a side of cucumber shallot vinaigrette salad. For those not in need, the meals are available at a suggested $5 donation. We’ve been blessed to be able to do what we love on the day-to-day. As our small business grows, we feel it is both a responsibility and a privilege to be able to give back to the beautiful community of Manhattan’s Lower Eastside and Chinatown. Our #kopitiamcares give back initiative is a way we’d like to thank our community who’ve been there for us with their support since we opened and, most importantly, it’s our way of saying ‘thank you’ to the neighborhood that gifted us ...our staff and team. Each month, we’ll gift a full meal to a group of local individuals whether from a non-profit, a startup (we understand how challenging it is to launch a new business), after-school program, a community sports coach, family, etc. We hope we’re able to do our part in providing a comforting meal to our commendable recipients and would love your help in our selection process. When nominating, please keep in mind the nominee’s role in the Lower Eastside and Chinatown community, whether you believe they should be rewarded for stewardship or are facing hardship. A fun article on Mr Hudson explores Thank you @SuziSiegel for including us! "We don’t ascribe to many stereotypes here at Mr Hudson, but it seems to be the case more often than not that gays love to brunch (we definitely do). And because NYC always takes everything to a whole other level, brunch in NYC is pretty outstanding. As one of the most international cities, you can literally brunch your way around the world in the Big Apple. If you’re tired of the whole Eggs Benedict and mimosa thing, here are some of the top places for an exotic brunch with a few of the best gay brunch places in NYC thrown in for good measure." https://mrhudsonexplores.com//gay-brunch-in-nyc-around-th/

Preorders for these two Chinese New Years specials available through our retail site: gumroad.com/Kopitiamnyc 1. Yes Sheng, Small ($28) serves 1-3 Large ($48) serves 4-6... Preorder via our website (link in bio) deadline 2/4 9:00pm, pick up only. "Yee Sheng (Prosperity Toss Salad) is one of the dishes most Malaysian Chinese anticipate and look forward to during the Chinese New Year. It is a communal thing and a lot of fun. The salad itself is delicious. It is what a salad should be, with all the right notes sweet, tangy, savory, and crunchy. The fun part is the tossing of the salad. Get the kids to join in. It is believed that the higher and more vigorous the toss, the better the new year! Don’t forget those auspicious wishes. Throw in as many as you can remember. It is all good!"-Malaysian Chinese Kitchen. 2. Handmade Ang ku kueh (aka Red Tortoise Cake)($3.50) we don’t have the tortoise but we do have Koi and Buddha, both equally as auspicious! 50 preorders available, we also have green ones made out of Pandan both with sweet mung bean filling.

[Presale ended thank you to all for the support] Remaining stock available for $45+$5 optional shipping Pick up orders will be refunded the $5 shipping cost when you pick it up at the shop... We’re printing these hoodies mainly for our team and will most likely not be printing any more after this batch. Turnaround time is approximately 1.5 weeks (not including the time for shipment.) Hoodies printed on Next Level sweatshirts in cream. To purchase please head over to our online shop: https://gumroad.com/l/kopitiamandrewteoh Thank you for your support ----------------------------------------------------------- We’re SO excited that we’re finally ready to print our first hoodies in collaboration with the insanely talented NYC based Malaysian designer, Andrew Teoh. After many rounds of brainstorming, revisions, and back and forths, the completed design is coming to life and we’re thrilled with the creation! (2nd photo is of the moodboard Andrew came up with that we loved!) Whether you’re drinking your kopi/teh tarik at an old-school kopitiam in Malaysia or with us in NYC, chances are you’ll be sipping your beverage out of a cream colored ceramic mug with an illustration of Malaysia’s national flower, the hibiscus. The classic kopitiam cup and saucer emerged in the 1930’s and we pulled inspiration from this timeless beauty for our own design to represent our Malaysian kopitiam culture. You’ll notice the detail of the cream-colored hoodie alongside the bold, earthy green color of the prints. You’ll even find old-time kopitiam signage charm and certain batik elements sprinkled throughout. It’s a rendition of vintage kopitiam culture weaved throughout our own funky, ‘cincailah’ personality. This is us starting our own tradition in homage to all the kopitiams before us.

Kopitiam 21.01.2020

Kopitiam 05.01.2020

At Kopitiam, our entire team is considered family (along with our guests!) When Kopitiam re-opened at our newest location, it was important to the both of us (Kyo and Moonlynn) to hire a kind and hard-working team from the neighborhood. We coincidentally ended up hiring, basically, the whole basketball team from Baruch HS haha! For most of the staff, this is their first job and it’s been rewarding watching everyone grow into kick ass individuals. Since we both grew up in the ...restaurant industry, it’s also important to the both of us to provide mentorship to staff who show dedicated initiative in pursuing the culinary path. Everyone, meet Kai! We’re proud to introduce him to you. He’s been with the Kopitiam fam since opening and is applying for culinary school next year. To give him a hands-on learning experience of what it would feel like to own a cafe, we’re providing a designated space in our display case to feature one of Kai’s creations, with the caveat that the dessert of his choice must have Malaysian influence. 100% of the proceeds from the sales of Kai’s featured treats will directly fund his culinary school tuition. Our goal as the business owners is to guide and mentor him with a realistic experience of the business, general overview of inventory, and being flexible with potential unforeseen challenges. For now, we’re tackling the challenge of heating up his desserts when it gets busy. Read more from Kai’s own words below! Hello everyone, my name is Kai and I am an aspiring pastry chef with dreams of owning my own pastry shop one day. After college, I took up baking as a way to use my spare time. I developed a strong interest after a while of baking and learning about it. Now, baking is one of my many hobbies and I try to dedicate my weekends to bake something for my family and/or friends. I’ve decided to apply for culinary school where I can learn even more about the pastry world. I am hoping that through my journey in culinary school, I will be able to encounter other pastries I have never heard of, as well as master the techniques used to make traditional pastries. I really enjoy making specialty cookies and tarts. Right now we have my yucca-coconut cake which is a delightfully chewy and fragrant delicacy made from freshly grated yuca, coconut milk, and pandan leaves. See more

It’s been quite the ride and growing pains for sure, but we’re slowly hitting that sweet spot and getting into the groove of things. Our initial plan was to feature 80% drinks, coffee and snacks and 20% food items (hence our counter setup and tiny kitchennot much bigger than the kitchen at the old spot), but things took a major change and went vice-Versa so a major thank you to our wonderful community for being so supportive and patient as we grow. We love you and can’t thank you all enough!
