There is nothing more important than vehicle safety. Take the extra minutes needed to fully clear your windows of ice and snow. Make sure you get the snow off the top of your car; otherwise, you are putting your fellow drivers in danger. #IAFFsafetytips #KPFFA #KingstonNY

CHECK DRYER VENTS FOR BLOCKAGES OF SNOW AND ICE While you begrudgingly head outdoors to once again shovel or snow blow your driveway, don’t forget to also clear the snow away from your dryer vent. While your dryer vent lets out heat while in use (and a great indicator that your dryer vent is not clogged is to look for a steady stream of steam coming out of your dryer vent), no clothes dryer can fully melt its way through deep snow. A blocked dryer vent can cause moisture, li...nt and other debris from escaping, causing a blockage. This blockage will prevent cooling of your appliance and also overheating the accumulating debris, causing a fire. CARBON MONOXIDE DANGER WITH GAS DRYERS Perhaps the most harmful effect from a snow-covered or ice-blocked vent stems from the carbon monoxide (CO). This gas can get trapped within the gas dryer and get released back into your home or commercial building. Exposure to the gas can lead to health problems, including headaches and dizziness. Prolonged carbon monoxide exposure can even lead to death. Although carbon monoxide buildup and exposure are not hazards with electric dryers, gas dryers need to be checked after every snowstorm or deep freeze to ensure they are venting properly. Please check your dryer vents and clear them of snow and ice TODAY!

FURNACE VENT SAFETY TIPS It is important to make sure your Furnace vents outside your home are free of snow. These pipes are generally a white PVC material. Furnaces can shut off entirely because these vents are blocked with snow or ice this is simply a safety mechanism. Without the proper ventilation, carbon monoxide can build up inside your home. The blockage of your vents will also decrease your energy efficiency. It is important to keep your Furnace vents clear and here...’s some tips how to do it: CLEARING SNOW AWAY FROM VENT During and after this coming snowfall, check outside to make sure the vents are clear. If there is a snow buildup blocking the vent, we recommend removing the snow by hand to avoid damaging the vent pipe. Use caution when clearing the vent pipe as there may be an ice build up hidden under the snow attached to the pipe. CLEARING ICE OFF VENT If there is an ice buildup, do your best to scrap it off with a plastic putty knife. Shine a flashlight inside the pipe to inspect if there is any more ice. Sometimes, these pipes will have a stainless steel screen at the end. If your pipes are equip with the screens, be certain to inspect them during cold spells and snow storms. These can be problematic as the moisture freezes over the mesh and creates a barrier. The stainless steel screens are helpful when you have a critter problem. These screens are available at your local hardware and home center.

With our first significant snowstorm of the season coming in today, please remember to clear the snow away from around the fire hydrant near your house. Fire hydrants are essential to help save life and property at an emergency, and the seconds saved by firefighter having a clear hydrant to use will greatly impact the outcome of the emergency.
