In just a few hours, this Falcon 9 rocket will carry Crew Dragon 2 to the International Space Station! Coverage starts at 1:30 AM EDT vía NASA Live, with a launch time of 5:49 AM. Best of luck to the teams at NASA and SpaceX, and go Crew-2! (Credit: @nasa) #Falcon9 #DragonCrew2 #LaunchAmerica
This #EarthDay, I had the privilege of chatting with the pre-K class of the Robert Vernam School, here in Queens. We spoke about the Sun, Earth our home and our Moon! Here I am demonstrating how small we are on the grand scale of things. Happy Earth Day, astro nerds. Let’s continue to take care of this pale blue dot; it’s the only place with tacos
In New York City, you have to play Which Light is the Moon? #SuperMoon #AprilMoon #SuperPinkMoon
GOOD MORNING Y’ALL, WE’VE FLOWN ON MARS From NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory: NASA’s Ingenuity Mars Helicopter captured this shot as it hovered over the Martian surface on April 19, 2021, during the first instance of powered, controlled flight on another planet. It used its navigation camera, which autonomously tracks the ground during flight. Monday, NASA’s Ingenuity Mars Helicopter became the first aircraft in history to make a powered, controlled flight on another planet. The Ingenuity team at the agency’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California confirmed the flight succeeded after receiving data from the helicopter via NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover at 6:46 a.m. EDT (3:46 a.m. PDT). ICYMI from @sofiatelescope: Scientists using NASA’s telescope on an airplane, the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA), discovered water on a sunlit surface of the Moon for the first time. Molecular water, H2O, was found in Clavius Crater, one of the largest craters visible from Earth in the Moon’s southern hemisphere. This discovery indicates that water may be distributed across the lunar surface, and not limited to cold, shadowed places. These photos were taken in May 2020 using an iPhone XR and telescope, with the Clavius Crater pointed out in orange. Additional mapping shown by Replogle Lunar Globe. #ClaviusCrater #SofiaTelescope #astrocelltography
From: @sofiatelescope: We detected water on the Moon’s sunlit surface for the first time! This suggests water may be distributed across the lunar surface, and not limited to cold, shadowed places. Previous observations from spacecraft hinted there might be water, but they could not distinguish if it was water, (H2O) or its close chemical relative, hydroxyl. Understanding the Moon’s water helps piece together the history of water in the inner solar system and also supports future human space exploration. Image: This illustration highlights the Moon’s Clavius Crater, where we found water molecules, with a call-out depicting water trapped in the lunar soil. Exciting new science results about the Moon break at 12 p.m. EDT today! go.nasa.gov/3dKNz6N The lunar research comes from the airborne SOFIA Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy and Goddard postdoctoral fellow Casey Honniball.
Due to ongoing fog conditions in the area, tonight’s social distance stargazing session has been cancelled. See you on October 31st!
