Working in the Bahamas our team is advancing #hurricanestrong house 3

+LAB 16.05.2021

Progress! Post Dorian rebuild in the Bahamas is rolling along. We have set new standards with this build for 220 mph wind speeds well above the island requirements. The project will be passive, harvest rainwater and solar powered. The project will introduce several new measures to the build.

From our community partners: Acquiring this land puts the community in a spiritual relationship with the land that can never be broken. As the new stewards, it is up to us to cherish and protect this Kuleana. Such a great moment. City Council Heidi Tsuneyoshi and Sam Makairan joined State Senior Gil Riviere in the community blessing, and Oli led by Cy Bridges. Project Kuleana led the blessing with song and Hula. A great day for the #KCRH, our work is moving forward.

Oli, a blessing was intoned by our community partners to enter the #KCRH project site. The Oli is asking for the land and ancestors to permit the community become part of the future of this place. The Oli was created by Cy Bridges a recognized cultural historian in Hawaii who grew up in Ko’olauoa. This is a major step for our work and the future of the Community Resilience Hub. Community leaders and families that can trace their lineage back 100s of years and government representation all sang the Oli to start the relationship with the past.

More good news for the LAB team. NSF the National Science Foundation has awarded a team led by our Director Illya Azaroff a research Grant for a resilience mobility hub. The team is with STANTEC, CUNY City Tech, NYCHA, social scientist, economist, transportation experts and community groups. The Civic Innovation Challenge examines a new way forward for communities hit by the pandemic and this type of social impact inquiry and design are part of our DNA at the LAB. #resilienrfutures

Continued good news for our director. Over the course of the last year, during the pandemic, we have learned a great deal about who we are, what our role in the world has been, and what our role can be, said Azaroff. We can now recognize that there are better ways to engage the world in our work and in how we engage with one another. Focusing on the future to create a blueprint for a better world is our mandate as AIA New York State. Illya Azaroff, AIA http://www.aiany.org//aiany-member-illya-azaroff-aia-to-s/

It has been an honor to advise the new administration Creating a resilient, regenerate future requires immediate and substantive action. We must face the challenges of climate change head on, for the health, safety and welfare of our communities. These recommended actions, once adopted, will initiate a wave of positive change and cascading transformation, to and for all _Illya Azaroff AIA https://resilientcitiesnetwork.org/resilience-21/
