Yesterday, the Lancaster Police Department responded to a report of a vehicle stolen after it had been left running outside of a gas station. The owner had briefly gone inside, and while standing in line, observed their vehicle leaving the lot at a high rate of speed. We would like to remind the community to take the necessary precautions to protect their vehicles when parked in their driveways, parking lots, gas stations, etc. Individuals are driving through areas intention...ally looking to steal unlocked vehicles with the engine left running or the keys left inside. This happens in seconds and has been happening more frequently. To protect yourself and your property, we ask that you please: Be aware of your surroundings. Turn the vehicle off when you exit it for any period. Close all windows. Remove the keys/fob and lock the doors. If the situation dictates, ensure all valuables are removed or at least not left in plain view. Try to always keep your cell phone on you. If you do need help, the call can be made more quickly. By taking a few simple precautions, you can protect yourself and your property.

Day 6 of National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week: Help Us Help You & Know Your Location When you call 911 or our non-emergency line, your location will be... the first thing we ask you. That’s because if we get no other info, we at least know where you are and help can be sent that way. Of course, there may be times when you don’t know where you are. In those instances look for landmarks, pieces of mail, or use your gps on your cell phone to tell us. Also, don’t forget to teach your children addresses. Children do call 911 with real emergencies and it saves precious time when they know where they are. If they don’t, do not worry, we are trained to help them figure it out, but when seconds matter, knowing an address can make a huge difference.

Day 5 of National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week: How to Become A Dispatcher. If you’ve been reading our posts all week and think this is a job you want t...o do, here is how to become a dispatcher. Sign up for exam notifications or frequently check Erie County’s civil service exam listings at this link: https://www2.erie.gov/employment/index.php?q=jobs-search Every couple of years the county releases the Public Safety Dispatcher and Police Complaint Writer exams that all of the Towns and Villages, as well as the County itself hire off of. It is the only way to be considered for employment in this position in Erie County. The exam consists of audio and written components, and if you receive a passing score there is a typing test that will need to be taken and passed. After that, it’s just a matter of waiting for vacancies to open up. If you want to make a difference in the community each and every day, being a dispatcher is a great way to do it.

Andrew Harnett, 37, joined the Calgary Police Service 12 years ago, after serving as a military police officer. He was promoted to Sergeant in 2019 and was most recently assigned to District 5. While working to keep our streets safe, Andrew was struck by a vehicle fleeing a traffic stop. Despite the heroic attempts by his colleagues and members of EMS, he died as a result of his injuries. There is a massive effort underway to locate and bring to justice those responsible for taking the life of one of our members. Dozens of sworn and civilian members are working around the clock tracking down each and every lead and these efforts will not stop. Original release below. Calgary police officer killed in the line of duty While working to keep our streets safe, a Calgary Police Service officer was struck by a vehicle fleeing a traffic stop. Despite desperate attempts by his colleagues, and members of EMS, he died as a result of his injuries. At approximately 10:50 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 31, 2020, an officer conducted a traffic stop in the area of Falconridge Boulevard and Falconridge Drive N.E. During the traffic stop, the vehicle fled, striking the officer in the process. Other officers were nearby and rendered aid as quickly as possible, while EMS rushed to their side. Paramedics and fellow officers fought to save his life, but he was pronounced deceased at hospital near midnight. The search for the driver continues. Road closures in the area are expected to occur for some time. No further details will be released at this time to ensure all of the officer’s family have been properly notified and cared for. Bridges freeze first! When expecting precipitation and freezing temperatures, remember that before the ground freezes, bridges can already be at or below freezing. Use caution on bridges and pay attention to the road to stay safe.

Meet Zone Sergeant Jason Cawley of Troop C. On Thursday morning, Sgt. Cawley learned Tioga County had received a number of 911 calls for a driver who ran off t...he road and needed assistance, but had not been located. Sgt. Cawley drove to the section of State Route 17C in the town of Owego, but also did not find the driver. While patrolling, Z/Sgt Cawley saw what appeared to be a row of mailboxes and waded through the snow to check the addresses. While digging, he hit the windshield of a car and inside was the subject who had been making 911 calls. Stranded for more than 10 hours, with no heat due to a broken serpentine belt, the man was suffering from hypothermia and frostbite. He was removed from the vehicle and taken to Lourdes Hospital for treatment. After speaking with the driver, Troopers learned he had been plowed in by a truck and his car covered with close to four feet of snow. The actions of Sergeant Cawley no doubt saved the driver’s life. Job well done. See more

We have received messages asking us to address the rules and proper use of a roundabout. There is currently one roundabout in use in the Village of Lancaster, with two additional slated roundabouts to be constructed soon. The existing roundabout will see some changes as well when construction resumes in the spring. Before reading the listed directions and rules, it is important to note the differences between a stop sign and a yield sign. A yield sign does not require a mot...Continue reading
