NEW BLOG - Hasui Kawase: A Master of Rain At the start of Hasui’s career, Japan was in a period of transition from the Meiji into the Taisho. Within two generations, the country had moved from a feudal into a model modern society. Foreign investments and industrialization opened Japan to an international audience for trade and exchange of culture through art, in particular printmaking. Demonstrating an affinity for drawing as a toddler, Hasui Kawase’s (1883-1957) parent...s recognized and nurtured their son’s ability, and when he came of age he was sent to the school of the painter Aoyagi Bokusen. There Hasui learned brush painting and drawing, assimilating specific Western painting styles into his oeuvre. After his studies, Hasui, with great reluctance, returned home to manage the family business as a... Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881-1973), Self Portrait with Marie-Therese Walter, Pencil on Paper with another drawing of a dog defecating on verso, with a "Cadre" label on the reverse of the backing board. "H&C" watermark. The drawing is accompanied with the catalogue, Rare Picasso by Joseph Palau I Fabre, which included this drawing. Literature: Joseph Palau I Fabre, Rare Picasso, Barcelona. Editorial Piligrafa, S.A., 1977 On September 5th, 1935, Marie-Therese gave birth to Pica...sso’s child, who they named Maria de la Concepcion. The little girl mispronounced her name and it was changed once and for all into the name of a goddess: Maia. Picasso drew these childish pictures when he wanted to amuse Maia, who was then between two and five years old approximately. The appearance of Maia so frequently depicted by her father is now the most exact reference we have to date them. And this leads us to place them between 1937 and 1940. (Many of the drawings are also believed to be by Maia or drawing with her father) In these cartoons Picasso combines supreme wisdom with supreme innocence. The childish drawings are also the reverse side of Picasso’s blue period. Picasso’s point of view changes in these drawings - sometimes he strives to express the child’s world with patent awkwardness; at other times his great skill makes it clear that this is the work of a master. This collection of childish drawings are almost completely joyful, innocent pieces, lacking in evil. Where evil does enter this collection, it seems to with great stealth. They’re not of a stormer nature, but rather they reveal Picasso’s state of mind at that moment. This lot is being offered with no reserve as part of our Autumn Fine Art sale. Live on @iGavelAuctions now to November 17. #igavelauctions#onlineauction#onlineconsignment#whatsitworth#estatefinds#privatecollection #pablopicasso #picassodrawing #secretpicasso #picasso

Huanghuali is a type of Chinese hardwood that was predominantly sourced from the island of Hainan during the Ming and early Qing Dynasties, though it was also brought into China from Northern Vietnam. This rare and slow-growing wood, whose name translated literally means yellow flowering pear, is a member of the Dalbergia odorifera family. It was, and to this day, remains a rare and highly prized wood for furniture and cabinet-making. Shown here are fine examples of 18th cent...ury Chinese huanghuali furniture that were purchased from Robert Ellsworth through a gallery that existed at the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art in the 1970s. Both Ellsworth and the Nelson Atkins Museum are known to have only handled the finest and best quality items in Chinese art and antiques. The @SniteMuseum of Art recently received a gift of an exceptional Sevres enamel ewer, a type whose origins from the Renaissance is commonly known, but there’s more to the story. The elongated neck, arched handle, bulbous body are influenced from central Asian design that was transmitted to China during the Tang Dynasty. The Tang examples were made for both burial and use and display purposes, with those having a sancai glaze included in elaborate burials for wealthy individu...als as a mark of status, and others with a straw glaze providing an imperious surface allowing for the retention of liquid. The director of the Snite Joseph Antenucci Becherer is among the few who is pursuing the collection of works of art during Covid as many institutions are cutting back. Congratulations to the Snite and the Virginia A. Marten family for supporting this acquisition. @NotreDame.#ArtsatND#SniteMuseum #AsianArt #ChineseArt #tangdynasty

Chinese Cloisonné began to be produced in the early Ming Dynasty. Made from metal bodies overlaid with wire cloisonnés and filled with enamels, these vessels often emulated ancient bronze and ceramic forms. One of the best periods in Chinese history for the creation of cloisonné and other works was the Qianlong period (1735-1796).
