In recognition of Black History Month, Kenneth Hatton, Director of Liberty Home Care, shares the story of the lasting perseverance and inspiration of his mother: "An African American who inspired me, though quite biased, but true, would be my mother, Josephine Burrus. Her strength, commitment, selflessness, courageousness, persistence and love for her nine children continues to inspire me throughout my life. I, in turn, try to pass this inspiration forward to my children an...d anyone who wants to listen. Raised in a humble, but poor, household in Little Rock, Arkansas, my mother demonstrated to her children that we really could do and be anything that we wanted to be if we worked and studied hard. She said don’t let anyone tell you that you couldn’t do just that. A single mother with little education (grade school), Josephine went from farm work for 12 hours a day in Arkansas to Senior Housekeeper at the Buffalo VA Hospital, still working 10-12 hours a day. I can only imagine the courage, strength and persistence it took to get through the tough racist and bias times that she went through. Without any complaints, my mother would walk miles to get food from the Surplus Store, or what we call now, the food pantry. My mother was strict and tough on us only because, (I figured it out later) that we had to study and work harder than the next person because we would face many prejudicial biases that we would have to work through in our lives. As much as she faced these same prejudices, she never spoke ill about any other ethnic groups. My mother’s favorite saying was, treat people the way you want to be treated, which is my philosophy until this day! My mother pushed us all to attend college and strive to be the best that we could be. My mother, my inspiration, my hero!" -- Kenneth Hatton
When asked which historical African American leaders inspired and influenced them, some of our staff members chose Mary Seacole, Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth and Mary Mahoney, who was the first African American licensed nurse. Here is a photo of African American pioneers in medicine from the Baylor College of Medicine. #BlackHistoryMonth #wny
