The world is a bit darker place tonight as I have just learned about the passing of a truly great man. Reggie Jones was so much more than just a lifeguard & a f...riend. He was an icon, a mentor and one hell of a character! He was the true epitome of what it meant to be a Jones Beach Lifeguard. He spent 63 years of his life on the perch guarding the lives of humanity as he would say it. All of those summers in the sun earned him the title of world oldest ocean lifeguard & still till this day he holds the record for longest years served by any member of the Jones Beach Lifeguard Corps since its inception in 1929. My rookie summer in 1998 I had the honor of lifeguarding the same beach as him. I was 17 and he was 71! He took me under his wing right away and was even the first one to call me Epi. I have a lot of fond memories of Reggie and his legendary stories and jokes. Reggie was truly born to entertain. If you knew him then you know exactly what I am talking about. I am a better lifeguard and better person for having known him. No doubt we will give him the much deserved lifeguard send off this upcoming season. Rest In Peace Reg. We got it from here. Update to our Lifeguard, CPR schedule. Lifeguard class Below is an update to our training. The classes will run with safety in mind.... When students come in: 1. We will be taking their temperature 2. All classes will run with social distancing 3. Students will be rescuing special manikins. They will not be rescuing each other Below are the classes that are currently running. Lifeguard original, Lifeguard Re-certification, Waterfront lifeguarding, CPR/AED original, Water Safety Instructor classes. The classes on our website are from January to July. We offer these classes in Nassau County, Suffolk County, Brooklyn NY, and Queens. REMINDER!!!! * To take a Lifeguard Re-certification class, you must have a current lifeguarding certificate or one that expired within 120 days. * NYS requires all lifeguards to re-certify in CPR/AED every year. Latest forecast is that there will be lower rain totals for LI & this will be more of a significant wind event. Be alert for strong, damaging winds Noon to 8pm with peak gusts 55 to 65 mph! There is chance of some isolated tornados between 1 and 5pm. Biggest concern will be coastal flooding and beach erosion during high tide. Waves will reach over 10 feet & of course there will be very dangerous rip currents!
