What Happened On This Day? April 7, 1894- During a blinding snowstorm, the Benjamin B Church grounded on a sandbar opposite Mecox Life Saving Station. All passengers, including a fox terrier and a Maltese cat, sheltered at the station for several days.

What Happened On This Day? April 6, 1911- The Prinzess Irene, a North German Lloyd passenger liner, stranded in a thick fog on the outer bar near Lone Hill. All passengers were transferred to the steamer Prince Frederick.

The grounding and wreck of Martha P. Tucker was, for want of a better word, typical for that time of year in the late 19th century. What was anything but typical was the story of the rescue of her captain and crew. The efforts of three women- Mrs. Rene Raynor, Mrs. Celia Southard, and Miss Jennie Rhodes- proved crucial to the rescue.

What Happened On This Day? January 9, 1889- The George Appold struck at high water under full speed near Montauk. To the delight of the locals, part of her cargo of shoes, boots, hats, and stockings washed ashore. Parties were held to find the mates of mismatched shoes.

What Happened On This Day? December 3, 1902- The Alice Reed, an American Bark with a cargo of salt, stranded on the outer bar about two miles southwest of the Napeague Life Saving Station. All survived but the ship and cargo were lost.
