YOU HAVE ACID REFLUX Eating garlic knots and forgetting to brush your tongue aren't the only causes of bad breath. In some cases, especially if you already have a solid brushing and flossing regimen in place, a lingering case of halitosis can signal a health problem, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). You may not even know you have it since GERD is sometimes a silent condition and can occur during sleep. But over time, GERD can wear away your teeth. In fact, research shows that 24 percent of people with GERD have tooth erosion, which a dentist can easily spot.

Diseases Your Teeth can reveal! YOU MAY HAVE TYPE 2 DIABETES Dentists are trained to spot more than just cavities: These red flags of dental problems in your mouth may signal a health issue happening elsewhere in the body. Red, swollen gums that may bleed are the hallmarks of periodontal diseasean incredibly common condition that affects more than 47 percent of Americans 30 and older and more than 70 percent of adults 65 and older, according to the CDC. Periodontal disease i...s brought on by bacteria in the mouth that infect the tissues and create plaque. 'Diabetes makes periodontal disease worse,' says Paulo Camargo, DDS, professor of periodontics and associate dean for clinical dental sciences at UCLA School of Dentistry. 'Periodontal disease can also make the blood sugar more difficult to control.' Research shows that diabetes is a major risk factor for periodontitis, a more serious form of periodontal disease that can damage soft tissues and destroy the bone that supports teeth. In fact, people with diabetes are three times more susceptible to developing periodontitis than those who aren't diabetic. 'If gums bleed a lot and are swollen or the patient is having frequent abscesses or infections, the dentist might start to question if you have a family history of diabetes,' says Sally Cram, DDS, a periodontist in Washington, DC, and a spokesperson for the American Dental Association. Diabetes isn't the only health problem associated with periodontal disease: The disease, which triggers a harmful, inflammatory response, is also linked to a higher risk of heart attack and stroke. "The Veggie Slice That Banishes Bad Breath"! If you fear getting caught in conversation when your breath is less than fresh, make a habit of packing a few cucumber slices in your lunch. After eating your meal, place the veggie on your tongue and press it to the roof of your mouth for 90 seconds. The phytochemicals in cucumbers will kill the bacteria in your mouth that's responsible for bad breath, so you'll always smell fresh.

A Helpful Tip: To Erase Stains: Clear gel hand sanitizer for a host of emergensies, like clothing stains, "Simply dot it on the spot, allow it to seak through and dab with a paper towel from the back". Compounds in the gel break up pigment-based stains like ink and lipstick.

Just a little FYI: One of your indoor plants had developed white powdery mildew on its leaves - a surefire sign of fungus. The easy Rx: Fill a spray bottle with a solution of one part mouthwash and three parts water and spritz on the plant once a week. Antimicrobial compounds in mouthwash safely destroy the fungus without harming the plant.

Taking care of your teeth can help keep your brain sharp, report scientists in the journal PLOS ONE. They used congnitive and dental health test to assess people with Alzheimer's disease, then evaluated them 6 months later. The results: Cognitive decline among people who had gum disease at the start of the study was 6 times greater than in those with healthy gums. The study authors say gum disease triggers a rise in body-wide inflammation that may impact the brain - a theory supported by prior reseach in which adults with gum infections performed worse on tests of memory and mental functon.

Alternative Uses For Toothpaste This Summer! Treat Poison Ivy Stings If you are unlucky enough to get a rash or a sting from contact with poison ivy, use toothpaste to take away the worst of the irritation. Just apply gently to the affected area and leave to rest for 10 minutes. Then, wash away carefully with cold soapy water. If necessary, repeat until the stinging sensations subside.... Eliminate Nasty Odours It is easy to get left with smelly hands and fingers after cooking, especially with garlic, onions, fish, or other pungent ingredients. These odours can actually make their way into the skin cells, which is why they hang around for so long. Eliminate them quickly by scrubbing your fingertips with toothpaste. Revive Tired Cell Phone Screens When cell phones are used constantly, but not protected with a sturdy cover, they develop lots of little scratches all over the front screen. You can remove these, but you need to cover a fingertip in toothpaste and lightly rub it over the scratched areas. Rinse with a damp cloth and then leave to dry. Enjoy the rest of your week :)
