I mean, your child's autistic either way. Getting a diagnosis won't make them "more autistic", but it might make their autism better supported. -Chris
I am often asked if I am familiar with Hyperlexia- and yes, I have worked with (and currently) work with so many hyperlexic kids- it’s actually fairly common! T...he next question I’m asked- Is hyperlexia always accompanied with autism? And I will say- I wouldn’t use the word always, but if you have a child who is not talking, or delayed in speech/language AND is highly interested in letters or numbers and/or can read or spell words at an earlier than expected age- yes, I think you should go ahead and schedule an autism evaluation. Remember- Autism is scary when you don’t know what it means, but autistic individuals can and do have many strengths- and early knowledge of letters and numbers is a very common strength! Hello all Little Squirts families! I hope you all are doing well and have found some time to enjoy the weather! I miss you all so much! We wanted to take this time to inform you that we have made the very difficult decision to remain closed for summer sessions this year due to the uncertainty surrounding the Coronavirus pandemic. It is my number one priority to keep everyone safe. Due to the very close nature of our work, masks and face shields are required which make it extr...emely difficult to work on speech and language. Also, as many of you know, we have a newborn in the house and we are doing everything possible to limit her exposure. We hope you all understand. We are so very disappointed to have to remain closed but we plan to be fully operational by September! I will be reaching out to anyone who has already paid for summer, and you will be receiving a refund this week. Please let me know if you have any questions and please keep in touch! Feel free to email or text me at any time!
Happy Mother's Day to all my Little Squirts families! We miss you all and can't wait to have everyone back in session!
Our daughter, Mila Viola LoBianco, was born on April 17, 2020 at 3:01pm weighing 6lbs 11oz and 19.5 inches long! She is the perfect addition to our family and we are all doing well I hope you are all staying safe and healthy as well during this time. We are taking the next few weeks to adjust as a family of 5, but please feel free to reach out with any questions you might have! I hope to see all my "Little Squirts" back here for summer sessions!
Mrs. Speechie P is at it again with more great ideas!
Happy Easter from my family to yours! I hope all my "Little Squirts" had a fantastic Easter Day!
Playdough monsters! This is another quick and simple project to keep kids occupied and let their imaginations soar! Use anything you have around the house to add to your monsters! We used beads, pipe cleaners, paper straws, googly eyes, and mini pompoms! Other ideas include pasta, coins, ribbons, or even small sticks! Have your children label the colors, describe the textures, label body parts, or even make up a story about their monster! Make sure to have your children give their monster a name!
This week my son requested a "boat day" so we did our best! The paper boats kept him occupied for quite a while! We added some Fisher Price Little People as our passengers All you need is a rectangular piece of paper! I did a quick search for "How to make a paper boat" online and followed a quick video!
Today we read "There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Chick!" By Lucille Colandro and completed another adorable craft sent home from Page 1 Preschool! I was able to replicate the craft using materials I already had home so that my 1 yo could participate as well (although I couldn't find any orange paper )! Let your child paint or color a paper plate, trace their hands for the wings, add legs, a break, and eyes, and you've got yourself an adorable chick! If you have access to this book, see if your child can determine the rhyming words on each page, see if they can remember the vocabulary (what she is swallowing) as it is repetitive throughout the book, and while reading, stop your sentence short and see if you child can guess the next word/phrase! These are all great literacy skills!
Copied post but a lovely silver lining If they cancel the rest of the school year, students would miss 2.5 months of education. Many people are concerned about students falling behind because of this. Yes, they may fall behind when it comes to classroom education... But what if...... What if instead of falling behind", this group of kids are ADVANCED because of this? Hear me out. What if they have more empathy, they enjoy family connection, they can be more creative and entertain themselves, they love to read, they love to express themselves in writing. What if they enjoy the simple things, like their own backyard and sitting near a window in the quiet. What if they notice the birds and the dates the different flowers emerge, and the calming renewal of a gentle rain shower? What if this generation are the ones to learn to cook, organize their space, do their laundry, and keep a well run home? What if they learn to stretch a dollar and to live with less? What if they learn to plan shopping trips and meals at home. What if they learn the value of eating together as a family and finding the good to share in the small delights of the everyday? What if they are the ones to place great value on our teachers and educational professionals, librarians, public servants and the previously invisible essential support workers like truck drivers, grocers, cashiers, custodians, logistics, and health care workers and their supporting staff, just to name a few of the millions taking care of us right now while we are sheltered in place? What if among these children, a great leader emerges who had the benefit of a slower pace and a simpler life to truly learn what really matters in this life? What if they are AHEAD?
This Saturday, April 4th, 12pm-2pm, the Easter Bunny will be across from the water tower on East & West Rd (across from Sunshine Park - between Garry Drive and Leydecker) This is a drive by only, but it might be fun for the kids to see and give the bunny a wave.
More great ideas from Mrs. Speechie P!
