Long Island Fire Alarm 09.11.2020

1950’s photo showing a Federal 7 1/2 HP siren next to what might be a 7 1/2 HP Sireno Model. The 5 HP Sireno sirens are 1 piece housings and do not have an eye-bolt. So the smaller siren is somewhat a mystery.

Remember Men! Audible Sirens & Diaphone Fire Horns are your Primary alerting device. Pagers & Cell Phone’s are the Backup It seems that many departments and especially the new & young generation of volunteer fireman have it backwards. This will cost lives & property. GET IT CORRECT! GET IT RIGHT!

The FEDELCODE siren housing body style of the 1930’s & 40’s is the best! LIFA has deemed it The All American Siren A Firehouse isn’t a true Firehouse without one of these style sirens plenty visible upon its roof!!

Signal 10 in Mineola next to Mineola HQ. You can see the Thunderbolt in the background. Does anyone have any info on this fire ? Such a Shame these days; Mineola’s Audible Alarm Array ... if it were 1965, 1980 or even 1989 you would hear 2 Diaphones, a Thunderbolt, 5 SD-10’s and 2 Darley 5 HP sirens ..... Today all you get is a Thunderbolt and that is just so Boring Naked!!!

Garden City Park, LI, NY. This 1943 Federal Electric FEDELCODE Mach 5 Horsepower siren is priceless! It’s been blowing along Denton Ave now for almost 9 decades 5 of which I have heard... it sounded much much better when it was mounted on that amazing tower atop of the firehouse. Just it’s position and mount. It echoe’d off the school or was hugely amplified by the schools sizable ball field...? Who knows what it was ... it was just perfect when on the firehouse! It’...s current pole mount is just okay but one portion of the sirens sound gets muffled by the valley or hole that it is in at the Marcus/Denton Ave split. It dips down dramatically there thus the south east side of the siren is at almost ground level. It’s not a good spot at all! This siren needs to be kept in good shape. A hole on the top of the housing needs to be patched! The siren is priceless !!!!!! See more

Once again for the new men; A Federal #5 and a # 7 siren are identical. The only difference between the two is s 2 1/2 Horsepower electrical difference which you can’t see anyway. You can only hear it with a trained ear At the proper electrical setup and equal electrical setup between the two sirens, a 7 1/2 HP # 7 siren will rev up to peak RPM 2 seconds faster...

As an audible alerting device From the late 1800’s till the 1920’s Diaphragm horns & Diaphone Horns were used before sirens were really developed and put into popular service. Here is a neat photo from 1920 from Salt Lake City Utah of a Diaphragm air horn atop a nice tower atop a tall building. Not sure what a horn in Utah would be used for in 1920 however? I don’t know what the threat would be?

FEDELCODE Mach 3. Or the # 3 siren as Federal also cataloged it.. So all beginners know; Model wasn’t givin to a Sirens name until the 1970’s. 3 Horsepower single phase 220v Built/purchased 1937. To avoid any disappointment I don’t want to say which Long Island FD this Amazing Siren came from as it should still be in service but hey! At least I saved it! Had I not it would have long been scraped by now. Foolish fire departments don’t know when they have Gold! This siren is priceless !!!!

Remembering Williston Parks Multiple Signal 10 (Row of Stores) in 2014 at Fordham St. & Willis Ave. There just happened to be a 7 1/2 HP Federal Siren there that sounded the way for the men. It screamed The Fire Is Over Here!!!

The Federal Electric FEDELCODE Mach 3 - 3 Horsepower 8 port Low Tone Sirens delivered to the City of Los Angeles, CA on December 20th 1941. There were a total of 30 of these 3 HP sirens. 30 7.5 HP sirens were also delivered. All 60 sirens were in service By January 9th 1942. Originally they were atop of tall buildings on wooden skeleton towers or wooden telephone poles. 10 years later the City of Los Angeles would order an additional 96 10 HP SD-10 sirens and 69 10 HP 5...00TT sirens. In 1952/53 all sirens were repositioned onto metal poles with a platform stand for easy servicing, where they still reside to this date. A total of 223 sirens were installed within LA Proper or the city of LA. This number did not include another 200 or so sirens that were installed in private self contained/sustained cities like West Hollywood, Hawthorne, Pasadena, Burbank, Beverly Hills, and so on. Due to the zero to low humidity and very infrequent rain in LA? These 75+ year old sirens are still in fantastic shape and will crank right up like the day they were brand new. They just need a paint job. Remember, 3 phase Federal sirens were built to run & last for 500 years to forever as long as they remained rust free! These priceless, unique and ultra rare 3 HP sirens do not have an A Frame on-top thus the short style housing and siren itself. See more

Box 5-2 ! Don’t dial 911.....Pull the Box! It will attribute to a 7 -10 minute faster response of emergency personal to the emergency destination where 7 to 10 minutes could be the crucial difference between life & death! Outstanding Audible Alarm array here in St. Clair, PA. The Diaphone Horn with a 3T22, and two 2 HP sirens. Thanks Tom Donathan

Garden City Park HQ. Federal 5 HP siren This situation is a successful failure. That means it’s fabulous that they kept the 5 HP siren from the old HQ and put it on the new HQ. A 2 HP siren installed here by No Service Controls would have been deadly embarrassing. The failure here is they put almost 1/2 effort and care into this amazing siren and mounted it 4 feet below the roof line Where 50% of it’s volume is lost in the parapet roof top... It should be 10 feet ABOVE the... Fukin roof line!! So the sirens sound coverage is fully utilized like it was on the old HQ. GCP get a damn tower already and have a little pride and respect for the great 5 HP siren that has served your fire district successfully for 65 years! Get rid of that Gay Blue and paint it red like it was for decades! This new fire house doesn’t impress me at all. When you fuck up a siren install you lose most of my respect. This is absiruation that can easily be resolved. I’m so glad that not a member of GCP has thought of this.... I have to say something and I’m not even a member. See the problems men !!!? See more
